She Received a Voice Note From Her Mom's Friend. The Lady Wanted to Give Her a Heartfelt Gift 'You're My Best Friend's Daughter'

While some dream of having children and a family, others are satisfied with having nieces and nephews to adore. Lina Perez (@lina.perez.nutrition) shared a voice message from her mother’s 92-year-old best friend that made many people sob on TikTok.

“Hi, Lina. This is Beverly Ooley. I’m a friend of your mom’s,” she said in a voice note. The elderly lady said that she came to the tea party hosted by Perez. Noting Perez’s penchant for using China sets, Ooley was hoping to give her friend’s daughter a gift.

“And I was wondering, I have a China set that I would like to give you,” the elderly woman stated. Inheritance can be a heavy subject, but not all parents make it so. In this man’s case, his mother even sent him on a scavenger treasure hunt for a part of his inheritance. But Ooley was direct and explained why she chose Perez to inherit her beloved China wares.

This isn’t about the china ?Knowing that she chose me to be the next person to have something she has treasured for so many years means more than I can put into words. She doesn’t have any children, and the fact that she thought of me for her beloved china is something I’ll cherish forever. Seeing the joy it brought her to pass along something so meaningful was such a gift.✨ I’m already planning to set a beautiful table and have her over in the next couple of weeks as a little surprise! Family certainly isn’t always the people you’re born to. Sometimes it’s the people who choose you along the way. ?

“I don’t have any children, so you would be next in line because you’re my best friend’s daughter,” Ooley said. She told Perez to call back if she was interested in the set. Based on a follow-up video, Perez definitely called back and now owns the tableware.

Her mother’s best friend entrusted her with a legacy

“Like I said before, it’s not about the China to me. It’s about the thought, the love, the gesture of her wanting me to be her legacy since she didn’t have any children, for her most prized and treasured possession,” Perez explained in the follow-up. The twelve-piece tableware set was from Noritake, decorated with golden bamboo leaves against a white porcelain backdrop. Perez shared that Ooley bought it in Japan during the ’50s while her husband was stationed in the country.

“It has so many beautiful pieces, and I just loved that she’s treasured it for so many years,” Perez said. Some of her favorite pieces from the porcelain set were the soup tureen and the serving dish. It’s perfect for gatherings, but also the type of set that would make a California man with a plate obsession’s heart sing.

A gift that made the internet cry

But Perez was not the only one who felt fond of Ooley’s gift. The video went viral on social media, with people chiming in, saying that Ooley’s gesture made them cry.

One social media user commented, “Being invited to that tea party clearly meant so much to her. Absolutely precious, what an honor to receive her China set.” Perez affirmed the sentiment, saying that Ooley still talks about the tea party to her mother every time they meet. For the elderly who live alone, having a stranger care for them, help them clean their yard, and run a donation drive for their sake would be a heaven-sent gesture. But for many seniors, simply having another person remember them, include them in social gatherings, and keep them company is more than enough.

Because of Perez, another person named Sarah on TikTok shared their story with a senior from a nursing home. She said that one of her favorite seniors saw her wearing tiger-eye earrings. “The next day she pulled out this beautiful tigers eye necklace and placed it in my hand. I told her I couldn’t accept it, we weren’t allowed to accept gifts. That night I got home and emptied my work bag, there it was, just as pretty as could be, slipped into the inside pocket,” Sarah claimed. 20 years on, and she says the gift remains precious to her. It’s the thought, and not just the gift, that counts.
