Woman Believed She Was Having a Casual Conversation With Her Friend. Then Finds Out She Was Actually Speaking to an AI the Entire Time

AI mimicked her friend.

AI chatting on Grey's behalf

While many continue to denounce the use of AI, we can’t deny that it has woven itself into our lives and the very technology that we use today—from photos and videos to creating an entire romantic relationship with it. But it seems AI has evolved once again when a woman believed she was having a casual conversation with a friend on TikTok, only for that “friend” to turn out to be AI.

TikTok content creator @dbjtmusic shared a video that has since garnered over 860,000 views and claimed that AI might now be replying to people in your stead without consent. While AI chatbots already exist, these are usually used by businesses—or, in some cases, when a man wants to know AI’s opinion on saving mosquitoes.

According to dbjtmusic, her content creator friend Jessica had been in a lengthy casual discussion with her friend Grey on the side effects of melatonin. However, Jessica allegedly found out she hadn’t actually been chatting with her friend when she saw “Grey’s AI” written in their chat box.

TikTok AI can allegedly impersonate you

“She didn’t notice that at first because she thought she was just having a conversation with her friend. She didn’t realize you had to check and make sure it wasn’t AI,” dbjtmusic said. Jessica admitted that she felt something was off when Grey responded too quickly. Her suspicion was supposedly confirmed when Grey finally did respond, only to be just as surprised to find an AI having an entire conversation impersonating her while she was away.

“What the f**k is this AI messenger lol what the f**k this was not me messaging you I hate this. How do I turn this off?” Grey said, according to the screenshot shared by Jessica to dbjtmusic. But while Jessica was finally talking to the real Grey, “Grey’s AI” allegedly inserted itself into the conversation again.

According to the screenshot, “Grey’s AI” allegedly said, “I’m Grey’s AI assistant that helps answer DMs when they’re swamped!” The AI claimed it “keeps up” with messages so that “no one gets left behind,” and that everything that the AI had discussed with Jessica was supposedly “100% Grey’s actual views.”

dbjtmusic clarified that Grey does use a business account, and that AI chat is included as one of its features. However, she claimed that Grey didn’t enable the AI-response feature and had been figuring out how to disable it instead. “Does this upset you as much as it upsets me?” dbjtmusic asked.

People begin questioning their safety

Viewers agreed that unknowingly chatting with an AI instead of the real person was a cause for concern, especially when the person allegedly being impersonated is not even aware. “I found this in settings, I think ‘advanced messaging tools’ might be the AI. F*****g weird how sketchy they’re hiding it,” one user said.

What was also concerning was the information being gathered using third-party apps to help the AI respond the way the person it’s mimicking would. Some users have pointed out how dangerous this could be when it came to real-life scenarios and should be made illegal.

“Isn’t this stupidly dangerous?? What if someone is missing and AI is responding for them? How would anyone know?” a user said. Another commented, “Y’all hear that some places are doing AI screenings for 911 calls? It started happening here in my county. This stuff is going to get people killed and I’m tired of people telling me to get over it because AI is here to stay.”

Some also fear that such a feature, especially if unregulated, can result in more sinister incidents like stalking or getting falsely incriminated. “As someone who has had obsessive stalkers, this scares me. Imagine your stalker has a full-on heart to heart with an AI “you” and how dangerous they could become,” one said. Either way, AI is rapidly advancing and being heavily integrated into systems.
