‘I’m so disgusted’: Arizona woman buys gala apples from Costco. Then her son takes a bite, screams, and throws it across the room

Freshness is an expectation when buying from grocery stores like Costco. Biting into an apple should be a refreshing treat to help cool off during those scorching summer days. What this woman’s son saw in a Costco Gala apple was anything but ripe.

What’s Inside This Gala Apple?

“I went to Costco today, and I got these apples,” Arizona-based TikTok creator Devina Sigala (@devinasigala1) says, pointing to the 3lb organic Gala apples on her receipt. “I washed and gave one to my son. He took a bite out of it. Then, screams, throws it across the room, and it opens up.”

When she removes the chipped-off piece, she unveils the source of the distress to more than 115,000 viewers: A brown, rotten, mushy core that encompasses the entire center. 

“What the heck?” the content creator says, repulsed. “I’m so disgusted. I don’t even know what to think.”

People Were Also Disgusted

It’s safe to say that everyone in the comments echoed their revulsion as they revealed similar experiences.

“The last three things of grapes we got [were wet and moldy] the next [expletive] morning. Strawberries did the same after two days. I’m so … sick of this [expletive] country,” one viewer remarked.

“The fruit has been slacking at Costco. Bad fruit every time I buy some,” another stated.

“Most the bagged fruit / produce is always like that. Tried getting lemons for a while and they’re ALWAYS moldy,” a third shared.

“Interesting we bought apples in a bag and they were bad too! I’ll just buy the loose ones now,” a fourth said.

Even an alleged Costco employee warned, “I work in produce. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING THAT COMES IN A BAG besides maybe grapes.”

What Is Going On With Costco Fruit?

For many years, Costco customers deemed the company’s produce “hit or miss.” What content creators and viewers have encountered is not in their heads. According to Tasting Table, one worker explained in a Reddit thread why this produce may rot before its expiration date: the stores are ordering too much produce, and the excess has to wait in the back until there’s room on the shelf. Therefore, exposing the possibility of customers buying spoiled food.

In the words of the said worker, “Our corporate office is so worried about something selling out that they’re [overordering] and they’re causing our quality to go down and risking the safety of their employees.”

Another possible culprit is the fact that Sigala bought organic apples and these tend to go bad faster than their counterpart. Because organic food and fruit lack preservatives, they have a shorter shelf life, per Country Life Natural Foods. Unlike organic, conventional fruit has the waxy film from synthetic fertilizer that serves as a layer of protection to trap moisture and slow the ripening process. Instead, organic uses natural fertilizers for its crops.

Luckily, Costco has a generous return policy and she could return them.
