Her Daughter’s Body Was Found in the Woods of North Carolina. This Is How She Lost Her to Overdose: ‘I Got Peace the Minute That She Died.’
A grieving mother says the hardest part wasn't losing her daughter to an overdose—it was spending 17 years hoping each recovery attempt would be the one that saved her.
The battle against addiction is often hard won for those who struggle with it. Equally affected by those dealing with substance abuse are their loved ones, who hold on to the hope of recovery. Linda (@linda.renee3) had a daughter who passed away after struggling with addiction for years. The bereaved mother recalled that while her daughter’s death hurt, something else had broken her throughout the years.
“On April 14, 2024, my daughter’s body was found in a tent in the woods, in Goldsboro, North Carolina, of a suspected overdose,” Linda told TikTok. She would later find out through autopsy that her daughter had indeed overdosed.
“For 17 years of my daughter’s life, we watched her go into recovery numerous times,” she continued. The mother also said that her daughter had tried both short-term and long-term programs and had gone to psychiatric hospitals during her long-winded battle against addiction. While going back and forth on treatment, Linda’s daughter had a total of six children in between. She would get some recovery but did not fully overcome her substance abuse.
Linda alleged that in the last two years of her daughter’s life, she went back to using drugs.
She Grieved Her Daughter Before the Overdose
“She became worse than I’ve ever seen her before,” she stated. Linda said that her daughter looked “unrecognizable.” Although she claimed that her daughter was not physically aggressive, her behavior became intolerable.
“She was verbally horrible—cursing at people, calling people names, yelling all the time,” Linda listed. She also alleged that her daughter had begun crossing boundaries, taking things, and sneaking around, manipulating, and swindling others. Essentially, her daughter had taken a turn for the worst—but this turning point wasn’t what broke Linda’s heart.
“It wasn’t so much the year and a half of her life that broke me. It was the 17 years—it was having hope every time she came out of recovery that she was finally going to be okay,” Linda stated. Because even faith in a person can be weathered down in time.
Linda thought that her daughter would change after having a child, after seeing a friend overdose, or having a near-death experience herself. However, the mother stated that her daughter would briefly pause, then go back to using. Linda said that the past 17 years had been chaotic, especially with children involved. But the family had gotten accustomed to living in chaos.
The Worst of It Was Over
Linda admits to missing her daughter, as she had been taken so soon. But the mother also admits to feeling a sense of peace two years after her daughter’s passing.
“The most ironic thing is that I still have peace. And I got peace the minute she died,” Linda stated. She explained that it was peace that came from how her daughter was no longer suffering and how the rest of the family could finally come to terms with the reality of the situation.
It’s not the ending a loving parent would want for their child. They would hope for their child to share their wild stories in sobriety, viewing those tough experiences with humor. But being at peace seems to be the only consolation for Linda, who had to watch her daughter break throughout the years.
