Three Friends Checked in a Hotel in Montauk. They Were in For a Surprise 'This is How Horror Movies Start.'

When people check into a hotel, they often think about the concierge greeting them, with the bellhop courteously taking their bags to their rooms. But Julianna (@sw4ggypie) and her friends were in for a surprise when they were greeted with silence upon checking into a hotel in Montauk.

“The hotel we got into… There’s nobody working here,” Julianna told TikTok. The hotel, whose name she didn’t disclose, didn’t have staff members in the lobby. There also seemed to be no other guests outside of Julianna and her two other friends.

“It’s abandoned. There’s no front desk—you have to call someone to get a code into your room,” Julianna stated. Essentially, they were still allowed to stay, but they would have to call somebody through the hotel’s phone to get a room code.

Was it really an abandoned hotel?

In an odd twist, the friends stated that “everything” is unlocked in the establishment. Although they could not access other guest rooms, other utility rooms appear to be unlocked for their access.

We had a lovely stay!!! There ended up being a housekeeper but there wasn’t full service staff which we weren’t aware of.

“We could steal anything and everything from here, right now,” Julianna commented. She and her friends continued touring the area. When she panned the camera to the dining area, it was empty. They continued walking around, and the absence of other people made it look as though the friends were in a place that closely resembled The Backrooms.

“We could go back into this kitchen right now. I’m too scared to,’ Julianna said when they reached a heavy door. When it opened, the door’s hinges made a creak. There was also nobody else in that room.

By now, some people would consider checking out and looking for a different hotel to stay in. But the three friends stayed, and they were able to eventually access their room.

Social media users were irked by the situation, with some fearing for the women’s safety. One commenter said that the women should be careful about posting their whereabouts since they were alone on the property. Another wrote, “This is how horror movies start.” Others have also pointed out the kitchen’s eerie creaking as a warning.

And somebody else commented that The Shining has a similar plot. In the movie, the main character took a position as caretaker at the Overlook Hotel while it was closed for winter. The chef warned him about the hotel’s grim history, and a month later, the protagonist started having gruesome visions of disembodied spirits and murder.

Outside of the warnings, though, other social media users were concerned about the lack of customer service. Many people opt for hotels over Airbnb because of customer service, so the lack of manpower might not make the stay as smooth.

A comment reads, “I’d be mad I couldn’t order room service or hang out at the bar.” Because what good is a hotel if not all the amenities can be used to the fullest extent?

“We had a lovely stay!!!” Julianna wrote in the video’s caption despite the odd scenario they found themselves in. She also said that there was a housekeeper but not a full-service staff. Even though the property initially seemed abandoned, there was still at least an employee to tend to their needs. Technically, the hotel is not abandoned.

They might not be operating at full capacity, but at least none of them were spat on by staff over a keycard.
