Women Watch Cop Chase Suspect From Their Car, Then He Hops in the Back of the Vehicle and Tells Them to Follow the Criminal
The idea of a police officer commandeering a civilian’s vehicle to chase a suspect is the kind of thing you’d only expect to see in the movies like The French Connection. But two friends from the UK city of Southampton saw their commute turn into a high-octane police chase after an officer hopped in the back of their vehicle and told them to floor it, as a viral TikTok shows.
The clip, which was posted by a TikTok user named Katie, has received almost 6 million views and shows a police officer running along the sidewalk after a suspect sprinting in front of him. The footage was recorded from inside a car driven by Katie’s friend (Katie appears to be a passenger).
Later in the clip, the cop is seen perched in the backseat of the car with the back passenger door open as Katie’s friend continues to drive. The two friends went from casual bystanders to active participants in a police matter in seconds. As for the officer, he looks poised to hop out at a moment’s notice, and as the car comes to a stop, he sprints away before the video abruptly ends.
Living a real-life action movie
Comments on the TikTok video expressed disbelief at the two friend’s bizarre encounter with the law: “This might be an original experience.” One person quipped. Another joked, “Ive[sic] seen getaway drivers, but not getem drivers.” A third asked, “How does it feel living our dream?”
Others had genuine questions about the legality of it all: “Can you get in trouble for just like saying no[?]” is a pretty good question. Another asked, “Lmao is that legal? I never seen that before.”
While it seems like the sort of thing to exclusively happen in movies, some commenters said that they had heard of police officers doing such things before: “[M]y husband jumped on the side of someone’s truck during a foot pursuit and had him follow the guy. [H]e said this guy was stoked.” A commenter claimed.
However, when it comes to the legality of cops using civilian vehicles in the UK, there is apparently no legislation allowing it, according to selectcarleasing.co.uk. A vehicle is private property, and there is no law allowing officers to use civilian vehicles to chase suspects. There’s also the possibility that the stress of the situation could have caused the driver to crash.
Anyways, a second video shared by Katie shows a little more, showing them pull up to an abandoned Toy ‘R’ Us where other officers were gathered. The caption joked that the two women had become “part of the police force for 2 minutes,” and claimed the officer actually told them to join a police chase. It’s certainly not something that happens every day, and it’s unlikely Katie and her friend will forget it anytime soon.
