‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Tickets Are Going on Sale Sooner Than You Think

Dread it, run from it, the chaos of buying Avengers tickets arrives all the same. On Monday, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively confirmed that early tickets for Avengers: Doomsday will go on sale on Monday, July 20th. This will be roughly five months before the Marvel Studios film is set to bow in theaters on Friday, December 18th. The article also claims that Doomsday’s runtime will be around 2 hours and 45 minutes, although that could change in some way between now and December.

This July 20th date might seem early to some, especially given how little we’ve still seen of Doomsday. The only footage that has officially been released for the film were the four minute-long teasers that played before Avatar: Fire and Ash last December, spotlighting Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four and the Wakandans. A teaser trailer for the film was screened at CinemaCon this past April, and many have theorized that the first teaser will be released publicly after Marvel Studios’ Hall H San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday, July 25th.

But the five-month lead is just the latest example of early ticket sales becoming part of a movie’s marketing campaign. Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey, which finally debuts in theaters this weekend, launched 70MM IMAX ticket presales a year before its release date. And Warner Bros.’ Dune: Part III, which is scheduled to open the same exact day as Doomsday (and has already prompted a “Dunesday” portmanteau among fans), also put some 70MM IMAX showtimes up for sale this past April.

What Even is Infinity Vision?!

The caveat is that this presale will be for “Infinity Vision” theaters: an entirely new label that Disney is creating in the lead-up to Doomsday. The branding, which was announced during CinemaCon, is the result of Doomsday not being able to open on IMAX screens, with Dune: Part III already securing a three-week exclusive IMAX window.

The initial announcement of “Infinity Vision” has been met with some confusion ever since April… and it’s easy to see why. According to Disney’s website, Infinity Vision is not a new form of technology or film distribution, but rather a certification that will be awarded to existing theaters that meet certain Premium Large Format criteria. More specifically, the theater’s screen must be a minimum of 45 feet wide, must offer 7.1 sound or Immersive sound like Dolby Atmos, and the projector must be able to reach brightness levels of either 14 footlamberts in 2D and/or 6 footlamberts in 3D.

Even then, the whole rollout still raises some questions. The exact number of Infinity Vision screens is currently unknown: in April, Disney claimed that there are already 75 Infinity Vision-certified screens in the United States with 300 internationally, but as of late June, the company revealed that they’ve received over 7,500 applications for new certifications. There’s a chance that we might not get a map or even a list of Infinity Vision locations until Doomsday tickets go on sale on Monday, which will compound on the already-chaotic experience of buying presale tickets. The website also stresses that Infinity Vision ticket prices will be set by exhibitors “just like any other screen,” which has led some to worry that ticket prices could ultimately be gouged significantly higher.

Either way, the Infinity Vision rollout will begin with Disney’s re-release of Avengers: Endgame on September 25th, which is titled Avengers: Endgame Encore. At very least, that will be a trial run for this new format before December rolls around.

As mentioned above, Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, December 18th.
