‘We’re on Our Way to Our Honeymoon’: Couple Left Feeling Crushed After American Airlines Overbooked Their Flight Leaving Them Without Seats

A couple who were set to jet off on their honeymoon have shared the moment their holiday plans were dashed after American Airlines allegedly oversold their flight. The moment was shared on TikTok and has sparked a discussion revolving around airline practices that all too often leave passengers feeling ripped off.
The viral clip, which has received over 2.5 million views, was posted by TikToker “@rubynoren,” and it shows the couple looking rather frustrated as they sit in the airport. The caption calls out American Airlines, reading, “we’re on our way to our honeymoon and you oversold the flight… my husband doesn’t have a seat.. That we purchased.”
The experience no doubt put a dampener on Ruby and her husband’s honeymoon plans and it’s no surprise the couple felt frustrated after they paid for their seats on the plane only to find out at the airport that they’ll potentially be split up and put on separate flights.
Why do companies like American Airlines overbook flights?
Passengers are sometimes blindsided by airlines, take one woman, for example, who thought she’d booked a flight with American Airlines, only to be put on a bus. So why would American Airlines do this? Why overbook a flight when there’s a good chance it will leave some passengers without the seats they paid for? Unfortunately it is a surprisingly common tactic done by plenty of airline companies to maximize their profits.
According to a 2024 article from the Independent, most airlines know that roughly 5% of passengers on a flight won’t actually show up. There can be any number of reasons as to why this is the case, be it a family situation, work arrangements changing, or just bad traffic on the way to the airport resulting in a missed flight.
Whatever the case there are usually at least a few seats that won’t be filled meaning airlines can effectively gamble that a certain amount of passengers won’t show up, allowing them to sell more tickets than there actually are seats on the plane. Of course, in the event that everyone who bought a ticket does show up it leaves the airline in an awkward position of having to kick somebody off of a seat that they purchased.
TikTok disagrees with the controversial practice
Many have had experiences similar to Ruby and her husband. “We were flying so my husband could be at his mother’s bedside as she passed away. Same thing happened.” wrote one commenter, unfortunately they weren’t able to make it in time due to the mix-up.
Some advised checking in as soon as possible to secure seats but others argued this shouldn’t be necessary as the customer has paid for that flight they should be assured a seat on that flight whether “you check in 24 hrs before or an hour before.” Some also called for the controversial practice to be made illegal.
Whatever the case, videos on Ruby’s TikTok page show that she and her husband were able to make it to their holiday destination after the frustrating delay.
