California Woman Was About to Marry Her Girlfriend of Seven Years. She Ended Up Wanting to Crash Her Car Instead.

The seven-year itch has always been a crucial period for couples. Erin Iveson (@eriniveson) from California, who was in a seven-year relationship with her girlfriend, was about to get married. But this isn’t a Pride Month success story, because by the end of it, Iveson felt the urge to crash her car.

“My partner of seven years blindsided me and left me for her assistant at work!” Iveson exclaimed. Her multi-part story trended on TikTok partly because she would scream the latter half of her intro. But the premise itself could be the plot of a messy Netflix special series for Pride Month.

Before everything went down, Iveson and her girlfriend, A, were considering settling down. After seven years together, she broached the topic of marriage and children with Iveson. While Iveson had little to no doubts about getting married, children were a different discussion.

They had gone back and forth on the subject. Although they weren’t done talking about the subject, Iveson noticed A getting ready. She had apparently planned to hang out with her coworkers at the beach—this included her girlfriend’s assistant, K. Iveson thought they’d have a serious conversation on that day—and they briefly did.

Why she didn’t want to have kids

“I feel like you’re throwing a Hail Mary to save the relationship,” A alleged during the conversation. Iveson explained that she wasn’t given an option—and that her girlfriend was the one who brought up marriage and children first. Although she says it was a productive conversation, her girlfriend cut it short for her beach trip.

Iveson would later tell A why she was hesitant to go through with having children. In a later conversation, she told her girlfriend that she was the “neighborhood babysitter” when she was younger. She had taken care of children all her life, and it doesn’t help that Iveson felt unsupported by her girlfriend with household chores.

Iveson said that her girlfriend helped her with housework “sometimes,” but that she had shouldered the brunt of keeping the household in order. She cooks, cleans, and keeps the house tidy. If Iveson agreed to having kids with A, she would be accepting more work than she’d like. But Iveson still wanted to be in the relationship, and she was more than willing to spend the rest of her life with this woman.

“Because if love is just putting away your dishes, and washing your laundry, and helping you walk the dog, I will spend the rest of my life doing those things because it makes your days easier,” Iveson told her girlfriend through text while she was at the beach. She also hoped that A would be proactive about helping around the house.

Iveson thought that the tension in their relationship was about having children. But a few days later, her girlfriend would get into the car, and she looked visibly nervous.

The drama almost crashed a car

“Who promised you this?” Iveson asked her girlfriend. By that, she meant the commitment—the possibility of marriage and kids. Intuitively, she felt that something was wrong. Then, her girlfriend turns to her.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have feelings for K,” she confessed. Kay is her assistant.

“I knew it. Did you sleep with her?” Iveson confronted her girlfriend. She said that in all the years they’d been together, they didn’t have explosive fights.

“Yes,” the girlfriend said, and she started sobbing. Iveson said she treated her girlfriend like she was fragile—it was unlikely for her to raise her voice. But then, at that moment, she started cussing A out for cheating on her.

“I want to crash this car,” Iveson said, furious at her girlfriend’s betrayal. What made the betrayal sting even worse was that their mutual friend had also experienced the same infidelity a few years ago—the same thing happened. The wife left for a girl from work, and their friend was staying on their couch, traumatized by the ordeal. A also became their friend’s shoulder to cry on, so Iveson thought her girlfriend understood the pain of being cheated on.

Iveson’s story blew up on TikTok during Pride Month. Since it had gotten so viral, Iveson’s ex-girlfriend reached out to apologize, asking Iveson not to post further. But Iveson still posts and has briefly gone to Mexico for a quick trip to clear her head.
