Appalachian Woman Inherited Her Grandmother’s Vintage Toy Store Collection. She’s Putting Them Up For Sale: ‘You’re Sitting on a Gold Mine’

For many kids, spending the night at a Toys “R” Us back in the day was the ultimate dream. Syl (@syllsthedollady) lived that dream because her grandmother ran a toy store in the ’80s. Although the toy store eventually closed down, Syl inherited the remaining inventory, and she’s now in possession of a ton of discontinued, limited-edition Barbie dolls, among other collectible toys.
According to Syl on TikTok, her grandmother kept all the remaining toys once her shop closed down. She showed boxes of toys in the warehouse, many of which are box-fresh. Syl panned the camera to a box of at least seven unopened Polly Pocket Barbie dolls. This collaboration was discontinued in 2012.
She also had a doll of singer Cher, a 1994 Shopping Spree Barbie, a 1994 Holiday Dreams Barbie, and a 1989 Dance Magic Ken. All of these dolls had been discontinued, and Syl had several copies of some of the dolls.
Syl also showed that she had the coveted Barbie and the Rockers stage playset, and although it had been opened, it was discontinued back in the 1980s. But outside of the Mattel dolls, Syl also found a box filled with McDonald’s toys that are still in their packaging. There were ’90s McDonald’s chicken nugget figures and a Cabbage Patch Kids collaboration. She also found Lisa Frank stamps, Voltron figures, GI Joe dolls, and Gremlin books.
Since many of these toys are no longer in production, dedicated collectors may be on the hunt for these items. It seems that even the commenters on TikTok are interested in several figures that were featured in her TikTok.
Sitting on a gold mine
Syl’s post went viral on TikTok, with many people marvelling at her collection.
Several social media users pointed out certain special items that Syl seemed to have skipped over in her video. One of them was the 1983 Great Shape Barbie, which supposedly inspired the outfit of Barbie from Toy Story 2. Another was giddy over the Barbie Polly Pocket dolls, calling Syl’s inheritance a “treasure chest.’
Many more were impressed by the toys Syl’s grandmother left for her.
A TikTok commenter wrote, “Now THAT is an inheritance.” For kids who’ve grown up in the ’80s and ’90s, Syl’s collection is a big throwback.
A commenter joked, “I’m 48. My mom said I can come over and play.”
Another said, “Girl, you’re sitting on a gold mine.” Others agreed with the sentiment, with another social media user saying that Syl might become a millionaire because of her stash. With most of the dolls she’s shown in great condition, some of her items can reach upwards of $450. But there are also items priced at $10, which doesn’t seem to be too outrageous for a toy.
Is Syl going to sell the toys?
Other TikTok users were also hoping to buy some of the dolls from Syl.
A social media user said, “I want a Voltron. My mom threw mine out when I was 6. Please I am 47 where do I send the money… I am dead serious.”
Another wrote, “Omg if you had an OG unopened cabbage patch doll I’d lose my mind.”
Although the initial video seemed to be the end of the haul. Syd has shown more in her other TikTok clips. Instead of keeping everything, she’s selling them on Mema’s Doll Shop, her Shopify store.
