Spider-Man Takes on His Biggest Villain Yet in a New Trailer for ‘Brand New Day’: His Former Employer

Spider-Man as a character has a lot to navigate in his life. He has a girlfriend, a superhero gig, and he often finds himself struggling to pay rent. In some worlds, he even works at a pizza place to pay the bills. And the new trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has a fun nod to the Tobey Maguire films. AKA Tom Holland destroys a “Gen’s” Pizza sign that looks a lot like “Joe’s”.

As Peter is crashing into a building, he takes on the sign that looks a lot like Maguire’s former employer. Sad day for good pizza. But it does kick the new trailer off with quite the bang. We know from previous trailer that Peter Parker’s Spider-Man is evolving. But what exactly does that mean? We don’t know and this trailer only gave us a little more insight into that.

There is a shot that makes me think his Peter may evolve to eventually having organic web shooters (please god, not again) but as Peter says to Bruce Banner, he wants the good parts of him and to get rid of the bad. In the midst of his evolution, Peter also has a lot of issues on his plate. Like being completely alone because of his battle in No Way Home. Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya) don’t remember him.

So how is he going to cope with all this, the Hand, and a plethora of villains? By having Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) and an unnamed Sadie Sink character on his side. But let’s talk about some pressing questions the trailer kind of answers.

At least we know how MJ is involved

A big question in the lead up to Brand New Day‘s release has been about Ned and MJ. They went to college not remembering their best friend and Peter Parker lost his girlfriend in the process. We know that he can’t stay away and he returned to Peter Pan’s Donuts at the end of No Way Home to see if she remembered him. In this movie, he goes to a party at Ned and MJ’s and learns the hard way that MJ moved on.

Ned didn’t, he’s obsessed with Spider-Man. But Brand New Day‘s latest trailer does give us some important information: MJ still trusts Spider-Man. When a villain of some kind threatens to go and see MJ, Peter has to act fast and he goes to her as Spider-Man and asks her to come with him and trust him. She does and he takes her to Frank.

So MJ is involved and part of Peter’s life, even if she doesn’t understand why Spider-Man’s villains are going to come after her.

What monster is inside Peter Parker?

We’ve heard a lot of stories about how Peter is evolving as spiders do but we get to really see how that’s shaping up for him. He’s not as quick with his reflexes, he’s struggling to understand his powers, and to top it off: He’s not in high school anymore. That youthful agility is gone.

So whoever is seemingly threatening MJ knows that Peter is not at his full potential. What could this mean for him as a hero moving forward? We don’t know but we haven’t really gotten the chance to see Holland experience becoming Spider-Man for the first time. So watching him explore his “new” powers is that journey for fans.

And until we know more, this trailer did give us a lot to unpack with Spider-Man: Brand New Day before it swings into theaters on July 29.
