‘The Vampire Lestat’ Killed Off a Fan-Hated Character in the Funniest Way Possible

David Talbot is not a beloved figure by fans of Interview With the Vampire. Mainly because of a body-swapping storyline that fans already think is in motion for The Vampire Lestat. But the show did probably the funniest thing possible with Talbot as a character.

In the novels, David is an “important” character as the Superior General of the Talamasca. But for a great many reasons, fans are not exactly hype for Talbot as a character. Even Jacob Anderson, who plays Louis de Pointe du Lac in the series, has pointed out how David sucks. Which makes what The Vampire Lestat did to Talbot even better.

**Spoilers for The Vampire Lestat lie ahead**

When Raglan James (Justin Kirk) and Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) trick Louis into a meeting with Raglan and Rashid (Bally Gill). Raglan is asking Louis for his help with the Fang Gang in Detroit, using Bruce (Damon Daunno) as bait for him.

As the two are talking with Rashid chiming in occasionally, they all talk briefly about Dubai. Rashid tells Raglan that Louis helped with 31 kills for them and Louis corrects him. “32 if you count Agent Talbot.” Raglan responds “No great loss. None of us liked him much.” That’s all we get. So Louis de Pointe du Lac killed David Talbot off screen and the rest is The Vampire Lestat history.

It’s kind of iconic

In the After Dark episode about “Toledo,” Anderson did joke about how no one likes the character and loved that he got to kill him off-screen. And ultimately, I do think the writers are smart enough to work around any storyline they might be setting up that Talbot was once a part of. He’s not exactly necessary to the story as a whole.

But it also sets an important precedent for fans. No character is safe, especially not ones everyone hates. Anne Rice has, in the past, considered Talbot a major player in The Vampire Chronicles series. Despite fans hating him. So the series making it clear that fans won’t have to worry about seeing Talbot is kind of iconic. Plus he’s already had his time to shine here.

We have seen David Talbot in the live action

In the 2002 film Queen of the Damned, we got to see Doctor Who star Paul McGann take on Talbot. To be fair, he was truly just like a Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) from Buffy the Vampire Slayer version of the character. Talbot helps Jesse Reeves (Marguerite Moreau) as she learns more about Lestat de Lioncourt (Stuart Townsend).

He basically helps to give her information on Lestat (aka his diary) and knows a bit about Akasha (Aaliyah). Other than that, he’s relatively useless to the movie so he didn’t really cause any upset. Not when the movie itself caused enough pain for fans of both The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned as novels.

So David Talbot being taken out off screen makes it kind of iconic that he has one okay live-action adaptation and that’s it. It is what Talbot deserves.
