The screenlife heist movie might pull from some fan-favorite crime films. But, LifeHack ends up stealing spotlight with unique approaches to a age-old story. Don’t take our word for it, this movie is sitting at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes as we speak!

Here’s what the cast had to say about their new movie!

Being women on the Internet

The delightful Yasmin Finney plays Alex and Jessica Reynolds plays Lindsey Heard. As the daughter of a crypto tycoon and a lonely girl struggling with mental health, these two are heavily underestimated in Lifehack. But, they both have real moments where it’s clear that they’re being taken for granted.

We asked about that dichotomy and got some really great answers. For Reynolds, it seemed pretty simple. “Because we are the women, obviously, that’s why! You know, you don’t necessarily see women in tech put together and shown in any sort of light,” Reynolds explained. “I think computers and the digital world is such a technical kind of, mathematical kind of thing.”

She continued, “You assume that women aren’t as competent as that. But really, we carry an emotional depth and an acuteness to us that maybe men wouldn’t have. There’s a lot of depth, power, and intelligence. I think we prove ourselves in different ways.”

Friendship through a screen in LifeHack

Talking to Finney especially, we got to the heart of so much during our talk. A lot of girls out there talk to their friends through Discord. And, they have to mediate those relationships and the world through technology.

“I think there is definitely a sense of strength within our characters and the way that we come together, to scam her father,” the actress pointed out. “I think that’s when you see the connection between the characters specifically. There was a moment where, I was interviewing Lindsay and I had the glasses on, and that feminine touch, you can kind of feel it? And, in the way that Alex is so nuanced.”

“I feel like she’s got issues with how she’s suicidal at times,” Finney added. “And she’s a gamer, and she has no friends, and all of her friends are boys. She’s that kind of character where it speaks to the truth of how some girls are today. It was nice to play that.”

LifeHack and Modern Families

Father figures and family hover at the margins of Lifehack. When we talked to Roman Hayeck Green and Georgie Farmer, about Sid and Kyle in the movie, they noticed how their characters were either looking for or bouncing off of that parental support.

For Sid, his home life kind of sucks because his stepfather is an abusive alcoholic. And, for Kyle, his Dad is always at work during the earlier bits of the film. It’s a lot for these young dudes to manage. Being charming and wickedly smart doesn’t insulate you from the larger world.

Hayeck-Green told us, “I think, yeah, particularly my character, it was kind of, it worked quite well that I kind of just met the guy playing my, playing my stepdad, kind of on the day, just because it was a little bit awkward, I didn’t know him very well.”

“And I think I heard he’d done wrestling before or something like that,” he added. “So he was quite a big guy, and had a bit of an aura about him. So yeah, it was quite, quite easy to kind of fit into that, intimidation.”

Where do young people go for community?

Then for Farmer, it became a question about this young man looking for somewhere to belong. “Yeah, no, I think, yeah, I mean that’s, that’s sort of the heart of, I guess, Kyle’s character is that he. You know, is sort of trying to impress his dad and sort of trying to, I guess sort of in some way, you know, build this sort of connection to like his distant sort of father figure.

“I also think that’s a big influence on why he acts the way that he acts. It seems like he doesn’t really have a positive male role model in his life, or someone to look up to, in that sense,” the star continued. “And so, I think that’s a big part of his sort of desire to achieve something, whatever it is, you know? Good or bad! I think it’s because of that absence of his father”
