‘I never ever rented a U-Haul’: Woman finds large item on Facebook Marketplace that she needs a truck to move. Then she uses this $20 Home Depot hack

Scoring a good deal on a piece of furniture while browsing Facebook Marketplace may feel like a win until you realize you actually have to pick it up. These transportation costs can add up, making the deal not so lucrative anymore.
Instead of paying for a traditional moving service or renting a truck the usual way, one woman on TikTok says she found a Home Depot workaround that only cost her $20.
In her video, which has garnered over 125,500 views, TikTok creator Sarah (@groovysarah) shared the moving “life hack” that came in handy during her college days.
What’s the Home Depot Moving Truck Life Hack?
“If you want to move something big off of Facebook Marketplace and you don’t have a truck, or if you want to move anything big at all, I have a life hack for you,” she begins.
Sarah says that while in college, she would help move her friends’ furniture in and out of their dorms, earning her the reputation as “the girl with the truck.”
She shares how she was able to do it. “I would go to Home Depot and rent a truck for one hour for 20 bucks,” she says.
Her hack, however, involved renting the truck at a specific time. “The life hack is to rent the truck 30 minutes before they close, so then you can’t return it an hour after you use it,” she says. “So basically, you get to keep the truck overnight for 20 bucks.”
She says she used the hack to help out friends and pick up her Facebook Marketplace items for cheap, fill up the gas, and return them the next day.
“It was honestly the best life hack,” she says. “I never, ever rented a U-Haul, didn’t do any of that extra stuff, just me and my little Home Depot.”
Commenters React
In the comments section, viewers weren’t convinced the life hack would still work.
“Home Depot closes at 10pm and opens at 6am,” one user pointed out.
Sarah responded, “Mine actually closes at 8! I lived in a college town lol.”
“Most stores caught on and won’t allow after 8 p.m. around here,” another wrote.
A third commenter suggested another option. “Uhaul trucks start at $19.99 for 24 hours. U gotta pay for mileage and gas tho,” they wrote. “I find this cheaper than home depot!”
Would This Hack Still Work Today?
Home Depot still advertises many of its moving rentals as starting at $19 for several smaller models and $29 for bigger box trucks.
While it’s unclear if Sarah’s life hack would work in person, if you try to book a truck online, it appears that you’d have to pay for the full number of hours you keep it.
Additionally, the latest pickup time shown on the Home Depot website is 7 p.m., and the latest return time is 9 p.m. Most Home Depot stores close between 9 and 10 p.m. on weeknights. On Sundays, when stores typically close earlier, around 8 p.m., the latest pickup time changes to 6 p.m.
While a customer can keep a Home Depot moving truck overnight, it appears the hours would count toward the total price.
