Woman boards Delta from Dallas to see ailing mother, realizes she would miss her connecting flight, but then the pilot comes to her rescue

Every once in a while, you come across a story online that truly moves you and makes you reflect on what really matters in life. TikTok user @xoxohannahwhite’s story is one of those. On December 10, 2024, Hannah posted a series of slides on TikTok narrating a story about availing a Delta flight from Dallas to see her sick mother, who was on the verge of passing away.
Talking about this experience, Hannah explains how Delta airline staff helped her during her time of need and made sure she got to see her mother before she died. She also mentions that some of her fellow passengers offered to help her with everything, which renewed her faith in humanity.
TikTok user @xoxohannahwhite credits Delta Airlines for her being able to see her dying mother
As previously mentioned, in a TikTok slideshow, @xoxohannahwhite shared how Delta Airlines stepped in to help her when she needed to see her ailing mother, who was on the verge of death. Recounting the incident, Hannah said her mother was hospitalized for undiagnosed pneumonia, underwent surgery, and was doing well, but suddenly her condition worsened, and she went into septic shock. As this happened, the doctors called her family members and expressed uncertainty about her condition and how long she had before things worsened, prompting Hannah to book a flight to see her.
Talking about her flight experience, Hannah mentions in her TikTok post that she had a Delta flight from Dallas, with a connecting flight from Minneapolis. She recalls that while she was on the first flight, she realized she might miss her connecting flight because the plane was delayed by an hour due to mechanical issues. She remembers thinking that, if she didn’t make it, she would have to wait until the next day to see her mother, and she wasn’t sure if she had enough time. Feeling distressed about the delay, she reached out to a flight attendant and explained her situation, but they told her there was nothing they could do, and that she would be booked on another flight the next day. Hannah recounts that she started crying at this point, overwhelmed by the thought of not seeing her mother again, and the flight attendant with her also cried. About an hour later, the attendant returned and told her that the pilot of her current plane had contacted the pilot of her connecting flight and explained her story. Upon hearing this, the pilot decided to wait until Hannah was on board. Hannah then reveals that Delta upgraded her to first class so she could disembark quickly and announced that she would be allowed to get off first. She also notes that it wasn’t just the Delta crew who helped her, but also a man sitting next to her. She says he pulled out a map of the airport to help her find her connecting gate and told her to run as fast as she could. When her first flight landed, Hannah ran across the airport and boarded her second flight, which had been waiting for nearly 30 minutes. As she reached her seat, the airline staff greeted her happily, and when she was leaving, the flight attendants encouraged her and wished her luck. When she was outside waiting for her ride, the pilot approached her, shook her hand, and said he would pray for her. Hannah then mentions that her mother passed away the next day and credits Delta Airlines for making arrangements that allowed her to spend time with her mother before she died. “My mom passed away the next day. Delta’s kindness gave me 24 extra hours with her. I was able to say “I love you” one last time and provide the comfort for her in her final moments, that she provided (f)or me my whole li(f)e,” wrote @xoxohannahwhite.

Septic shock cases are not uncommon
In the ICU context, Fleischmann-Struzek et al. conducted an updated systematic review and meta-analysis, finding that hospital-treated sepsis occurs at about 189 per 100,000 person-years, with a pooled mortality rate of around 26.7%. The severity is even greater in ICU-managed sepsis, where hospital discharge mortality approaches 41.9% in this high-risk group. Septic shock, as the most severe form of sepsis, causes even higher mortality. Vincent et al. performed a detailed meta-analysis, revealing that the incidence of septic shock at ICU admission is 10.4%, with 8.3% occurring during the ICU stay. Notably, ICU mortality for septic shock patients is approximately 37.3%, and hospital mortality slightly increases to 39.0%.
