Rep. Chip Roy proposes the racist ‘MAMDANI Act’ to Congress

Rep. Chip Roy at a House Judiciary Committee hearing

Rep. Chip Roy from Texas introduced a racist bill to Congress. Named the ‘MAMDANI Act,’ the bill aims to take extreme measures against perceived terrorists. But is Roy’s bill achievable or just a poor attempt at grabbing headlines?

Otherwise known as the ‘Measures Against Marxism’s Dangerous Adherents and Noxious Islamists Act of 2026,’ it aims to denaturalize and deport citizens who are aligned with the Chinese Communist Party, communists, socialists, and Islamic fundamentalists.

Roy doesn’t hide his attempt to take a jab at New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The mayor is a Muslim and a self-professed democratic socialist. But concerningly, Mamdani would most likely be affected if Roy’s bill pushes through. As per the description of the bill, those who advocate for the aforementioned ideas may be stripped off of US citizenship.

Chip Roy’s Bill as Unnecessary

Implementation is where the problem lies in the bill. Assuming that it’s given serious consideration, to what extent does the government intend to curtail free speech? The sitting party can easily weaponize the bill. They can accuse political opponents of being extremists under the label and use deportation as a punishing mechanism.

But putting implementation aside, there are already various laws that exist to safeguard Americans from terrorism. Especially after the events of September 11, the United States enacted laws in place under the pretense of protecting citizens. The USA Patriot Act of 2001 gave the intelligence community more power, expanding surveillance of civilians in technology.

Even before that, the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA) of 1996 was already in place. The AEDPA was introduced by former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole to enhance national security. It enabled the federal government to deny visas to individuals linked to terrorist groups and deport legal residents who also have ties to the same. With that said, Americans have sufficient, pre-existing laws that protect them from terror groups.

Moreover, the ‘MAMDANI Act’ by Chip Roy clashes with the United States Constitution. The First Amendment protects the right of Americans to freely exercise their religion. Fundamentally, the bill is discriminatory.

Besides, Christian nationalists in the United States have also used religion to commit acts of violence, and yet they, as a group, are not included in Roy’s proposal. Never mind that right-wing attacks and plots accounted for most of the terror incidents in the United States since 1994.

Yet, the establishment hesitates to call those attacks for what they are—terrorism. Instead, terrorism appears to be sharply reserved for Muslims. Needless to say, if Roy’s concern was truly terrorism, he would include Christian nationalist groups as well.

Chip Roy’s bill grilled online

Social media largely criticized Roy’s bill. Some called it “un-American,” while others thought that more ought to be done against the normalization of the hateful rhetoric.

Journalist Mehdi Hasan, who is also a Muslim, lambasted the bill in a post. He wrote, “Our media spends a lot of time on the (undeniable) evils of antisemitism, meanwhile Islamophobia is out of control on the right and beyond any other form of normalized and amplified bigotry in this country.”

Other GOP members have also recently gotten heat for propagating the same anti-Muslim rhetoric. Some have even doubled-down without remorse, and yet they’ve met no consequences over their inflammatory statements.
