Splitting the bill on a date is still a controversial topic. While some people stick to the idea that one person, usually the man in heterosexual relationships, should cover the whole thing, others see no issue with going half and half.

But according to one TikTok creator, her date had a very different idea of what “splitting the bill” actually means.

In a video that has garnered over 126,200 views, TikToker Brookeyyy (@brookeyyycookie) shares how her date handled the check, and why it didn’t sit right with her.

What Happened On The Date?

“He asked the waiter to split the bill before we’d even ordered,” she begins. “He said it was so there was no confusion later.”

She says she found it odd, but went along with it. “I was like, OK, weird, but fine,” she says.

Then the ordering started. “He proceeds to order appetizers, drinks, desserts, like he’s celebrating something,” she says. “Meanwhile, I got one drink.”

When the bill came, she says the situation took a turn.

“He looks at me and he’s like, ‘We’re still splitting, right?’” she says.

She shut it down. “I said, ‘Oh, no. I’m paying for what I got,’” she recalls.

According to her, he pushed back. “He had the audacity to look at me and say, ‘That’s not how splitting works, right?’” she says.

She says she responded quite bluntly.“I said, ‘It is tonight,’” she says, adding that she put down cash for her drink and left.

Commenters React

In the comments section, viewers had strong reactions to the situation.

“No confusion… get up and leave,” one person wrote.

“I cannot fathom this behavior,” another said.

“Okay he wants to be just friends,” a third added.

“Saw this coming. Correct him in a confirmation type tone ‘yes, separate checks would be fine,’” another suggested.

What’s The Difference Between Splitting And Separate Checks?

In most restaurants, “splitting the bill” usually means dividing the total evenly between everyone at the table, regardless of what each person ordered.

“Separate checks,” on the other hand, means each person pays only for what they personally ordered.

That difference is what caused the confusion here. While her date asked to split the bill at the start, she says his ordering didn’t match that approach at all.

When you’re splitting a bill, it’s usually understood that everyone orders a somewhat equal number of dishes. For example, one appetizer, main, and dessert each. That’s likely why the TikToker decided to just cover her own drink and leave.
