Casting Rumors For the Next DC Adventure Yet Again Squashed by James Gunn

James Gunn attends HBO's "Peacemaker" Season 2 Premiere at AMC Lincoln Square Theater on August 13, 2025 in New York City.

Speculation around casting is half the fun of movies from powerhouses like DC and Marvel. However, that does mean rumors are rife, and even sources that many consider solid can be wrong. And, when supposedly reputable publications put out allegedly false information, studio heads like James Gunn sometimes have to respond.

According to a post from Gunn, industry heavyweights Deadline released an incorrect report about the casting for Man of Tomorrow, the newest Superman project from DC, set to be released in July 2027. The publication claimed Marisa Abela, Ella Purnell, and Adria Arjona were testing for the role of Maxima, the powerful alien queen who likes to live life in the moral grey zone, and has a bit of a thing for the Man of Steel. While her loyalties fluctuate across her appearances in the DC universe, it seems that in Man of Tomorrow Maxima will be an antagonist.

Arjona was in superhero flop Morbius, so may be looking to redeem herself in the eyes of the comic book faithful, and has also worked with Gunn before. Brits Purnell and Abela have both been making waves, the former getting rave reviews for her performance in Fallout and the latter being lauded for her role in the hit show Industry. So, it is quite believable that their names would be in the ring for big projects like this. That could be why Gunn was so effusive in his denial.

The DC CEO put out his rebuttal with an embedded post from Nexus Point News, although he mentioned Deadline by name as that is who Nexus sourced in their initial message.

In the post, he claimed he was “disappointed” with Deadline, and said that while he was a “fan of both Marisa and Ella” he had “never met either of them.” Plus, many believe Arjona is set to play Wonder Woman, freeing us all of the horror that is Gal Gadot’s attempts at acting. So, it appears the prize of Maxima is still waiting to be claimed, and Deadline needs to check their sources a little more thoroughly next time.
