A lot of people find great steals at T.J Maxx, including products that they’ll use for a lifetime. But what happens when a particular, dainty piece of jewelry, like a bolo bracelet, almost costs a person their life?

That’s what happened to one woman after a fateful purchase of a bolo bracelet at the store nearly cost her her life. After a personal experience where she came extremely close to crashing her car, she realized that bolo bracelets can get stuck in a vehicle’s steering wheel, causing near-fatal incidents.

TikToker Becky (@.imnotbeckyhomeecky) noticed that dangly bracelets in particular—like some of the ones still available at T.J. Maxx and other retailers—have small enough pieces to get caught inside the steering wheel of a car. She emphasized that the bracelets, due to their thin composition, pose a potential issue for anyone driving with them who has a wheel like hers. Then, she showed what her wheel and the bracelets look like in her video, which now has over 260,000 views.

Commenters agreed, saying they’ve experienced similar encounters while wearing the bracelets and urging viewers to watch out for any issues. Surprisingly, multiple women shared that they had the exact same experience with other bolo bracelets and said that it’s best to take off jewelry before driving.

What’s wrong with T.J. Maxx’s bracelets?

There’s nothing specifically wrong with the bracelets at T.J. Maxx. But Becky and other viewers noticed they can get stuck in awkward places. The bracelets that Becky bought, in particular, are thin with lots of individual, flat charms. That, in particular, can spell out disaster in a car.

Becky first noticed the issue when driving around a year before she posted her video. She mentioned that two times during one particular week, she accidentally got stuck because of her bolo bracelet. That nearly made her crash her car.

She reflected on this in her video, saying, “ When I drive, I’ll either take them off or I’ll like, twist up the little string or whatever, or chain… They can get caught in your steering wheel and they almost made me wreck and die.”

She also applied her PSA to other types of bracelets.  ”So just be mindful if you wear bracelets like this and you have a steering wheel like mine,” she added toward the end of her clip.

Commenters share similar experiences

Surprisingly, to some, multiple viewers shared extremely similar experiences to the one that Becky had. While Becky drives a Toyota Prius, the issue wasn’t exclusive to her car’s make and model. Rather, drivers with Kias and a multitude of other cars had the exact same issue.

Viewers were also able to identify the bracelet “type” that seems to be the culprit in most of these incidents. Bolo bracelets traditionally come with additional, thin metal cords that users can adjust. Once adjusted, they’re technically loose, making them a risk for those driving cars with small aesthetic divots in their steering wheels.

The issue is not exclusive to T.J Maxx bracelets. “This has happened to me w a pandora bracelet I learned to stop wearing it while driving,” one commenter said.

Others mentioned that they stopped wearing their bolo bracelet or dangly jewelry altogether to avoid additional risks.

So, next time you’re in your vehicle, consider taking off your bracelets and dangly jewelry. It could end up saving your life.
