Tipping culture in the U.S. is a sore subject for a lot of people. Still, most diners continue to tip, especially when eating out.

Unlike in most other countries, tips in the U.S. aren’t just extra; they’re built into how servers are paid. Under federal law, some tipped workers can earn a base wage as low as $2.13 an hour, with tips expected to make up the difference.

Because of that, many customers understand why not tipping can be a big deal. But does that mean servers should confront customers over it?

That’s what one woman on TikTok, creator India (@astoldbyindie), asked viewers in a recent video that has garnered over 113,000 views, after a recent unusual experience at lunch.

What Happened During Lunch?

She explains that a family member took her out to lunch at a Thai restaurant in Virginia to celebrate her birthday.

“This particular family member I do know to be cheap,” she says.

When it came time to pay, she says that the family member covered the bill in cash.

“I see them kinda like count out the exact change… and in my mind I’m like, I really hope they’re not giving exact change with no tip,” she says.

She adds that she couldn’t have contributed at that moment.

“I also don’t have cash on me. I only have my credit card,” she says.

As they were getting ready to leave, India says their server confronted them.

“The waitress comes back over, and she says something like, ‘If you guys don’t want to tip, then next time… order takeout and don’t dine in,’” she recalls.

She says she was caught off guard. “I’ve never in my life had someone approach me like that,” she says.

India says she responded by offering to pay the tip herself.

“If you want a tip, I can run your tip on my card,” she says. “But this is inappropriate.”

The server declined. “She actually denied me giving her a tip and was like, ‘I just want to let you guys know,’” she says.

She Says The Interaction Felt Out Of Line

Though she acknowledges tips are generally expected, she questions the way the server handled it.

“I think not tipping is crazy… I do tip,” she says. “It actually doesn’t matter, because tipping is not mandatory. So the fact that you thought you could talk to us like that really blew my mind.”

She adds that she was also frustrated with her family member for not leaving a tip in the first place, but still felt the confrontation crossed a line.

The story ends with her turning the question back to the viewers.

“I want to know what y’all think,” she says. “This is such an interesting situation to me.”

Commenters Are Split On Whether Servers Should Speak Up

In the comments, viewers had mixed reactions to how the situation was handled.

“I never confront. I just let it go and remember it next time they come in so I know to prioritize them last,” one server wrote.

Others pointed to how some restaurants are handling situations like this.

“This is why places are doing automatic gratuity and I’m not mad at it,” another said.

Some argued the issue isn’t with customers at all.

“No they should confront their boss for not paying enough,” a third wrote.

Do Servers Often Confront Customers Over Tips?

According to other servers online, this is a serious offense that could get you fired.

In a thread on Reddit’s r/TalesFromYourServer, one user asked, “I understand we can’t force someone to tip us but when you pick up your slip and see a customer clearly didn’t tip you and they are still within the restaurant, do you confront them?”

Most responses leaned against it.

“Confronting for tipping is an immediate termination at most places I’ve worked,” one person wrote.

Others said it’s better to move on.

“How do I handle them? Real easy, ignore them and move on. Confronting them is gonna cause you nothing but grief, and it won’t change them…” another added.

Some also pointed out that it comes with the job.

“Don’t take it personal. If you work a tipped job you have to accept the fact that there are good tippers and bad tippers. It’s a game of averages. You have to get the bad ones to also get the good ones,” a third wrote.
