Ryan Gosling channels his ‘main character energy’ in Project Hail Mary

Ryan Gosling starring on Project Hail Mary

Ryan Gosling spilling the tea in pure Gen-Z is an unexpected twist in this Project Hail Mary promotion. The memes have broken out of containment as Gosling and Jeremy Lynch have a conversation that someone chronically online would understand.

“Broski, I’ve got tea,” Jeremy Lynch said, sitting down with Ryan Gosling to talk about Project Hail Mary. When Lynch informed Gosling about piloting for the project, he replied, “You’re capping.”

No cap? Lynch confirms, “No cap.”

“This hits different,” Gosling said.

“This is your save-the-planet era, bro,” Lynch praised. Gosling had doubts if he could “slay this mission.”

Lynched warned him, “If you don’t, the earth is cooked.” Gosling said he was “low-key panicking inside.”

“If I do this and I don’t slay, it’s a historical L,” Gosling worried.

“But if you do… Massive W,” Lynch said, which is enough of a reason to go for the W.

But Gosling asks the most sensible question in his position. “Do you think I got the aura to pull this off?” Many planets and worlds have been saved by aura farming alone.

“Bro… You’re him,” Lynch said. Because there’s no better way to reassure a homie by helping him aura-farm.

“The math ain’t mathing, you caught me lacking. Why me?” Gosling asked, still unconvinced that he’s the main character.

“Well, the selectors are pretty based, and they said you passed the vibe check,” Lynch said. Translation? The people who’ve chosen Gosling are credible, and he’s got what it takes.

“It’s giving,” Gosling said—giving what, exactly? It’s giving yes from Gosling.

“You got this, king. Remember: don’t be mid,” Lynch gave the single most important advice any bro can give to his homie.

“Bet, I’m gonna eat and leave no crumbs,” Gosling said, finally embodying his “full main character energy.

“Let him cook,” Lynch and Gosling said.

The skit ate on TikTok

The only thing that makes this skit unconvincing is the lack of 6-7 references—but maybe Project Hail Mary has that in store for viewers? Regardless, TikTok users were laughing in shame because they understood the whole skit with no translations. One wrote, “hate that i understood everything and it all made sense.”

But the skit is so ridiculously Gen-Zified, it’s hard to believe that neither Gosling nor Lynch got it all in one take. In a follow-up video of their bloopers, Lynch showed that they, in fact, were laughing at all the ridiculous references during filming.

Ryan Gosling even choked while drinking from the tea cup, probably in disbelief of himself when he said “spill the tea.” He snorted when he had to say “full main character energy.” Even a seasoned actor like him couldn’t take the slang seriously.

Even Jeremy Lynch couldn’t contain his laughter when he had to say “you got this, king” to Gosling. Anything for a promo—especially when the movie has blockbuster potential.

For all the jokes thrown around in this skit, Project Hail Mary has got $54.5 million in its second week. It looks like Gosling took Lynch’s advice—don’t be mid. And with those numbers? Gosling definitely dropped a crown. Now out in cinemas since March 20, Project Hail Mary is expected to run up until sometime in April. The best way to find out what the tea is all about is to watch it in theaters.
