Ryan Gosling Is a Legend of ‘SNL.’ Not a Five Timer but Still a Legend (With This Promo)

Even if you don’t regularly keep up with Saturday Night Live, the chances that you’ll tune in for another episode hosted by Ryan Gosling are high. After all, he’s an SNL legend. Consistently funny and charming. Offensively handsome. And we all want to see if there will be another “Papyrus” or “Close Encounters” sketch.
Honestly, let’s face it: Gosling has been part of some of the best sketches of the last decade. I can’t think about any of his sketches without giggling. It feels like he’s part of the 5 Timers Club at this point. And in the promo for his upcoming episode this Saturday, he thinks so, too.
Set to “Clint Eastwood” by Gorillaz (who are this week’s musical guests), the promo shows Gosling finding the 5 Timers Club robe, putting it on, and wreaking havoc on Studio 8H. Some of the chaos includes lighting a picture of SNL cast member Mikey Day on fire and using it to light a cigarette, as well as popping champagne from atop a giant fake horse.
When Day confronts him, Gosling brushes it off because he’s part of the 5 Timers Club now, so he’s allowed. but, as Day points out, it’s only his fourth time hosting, before naming off Gosling’s iconic sketches. It’s funny. It’s cheeky. It’s just what we need right now.
If there’s one thing humanity can agree on, it’s Gosling hosting SNL
Fans are just as excited. Said one user on YouTube, “Ryan is the only host where breaking in a sketch is not only expected, it’s demanded.”
And it’s true. Normally, breaking character, unless something just really is that funny, is frustrating. You couldn’t hold it together for five minutes? But somehow every time, Gosling just makes it so darned endearing. He really is trying his best!
Said another, “Gosling is such a goddam[sic] underrated comedic actor! Dude is deadpan brilliance.”
This should be common knowledge, because deadpan comedy is not as easy as it seems. If you enjoy his Saturday Night Live episodes, you are obligated–if you have not already–to watch The Nice Guys. You will find no better examples of deadpan comedy gold than you will in that movie.
All of this to say, it seems like the whole world (I know I’m being hyperbolic, but they should be) is ready for another chance to watch Gosling on that iconic stage. Consider your Saturday booked and busy.
