Idaho woman gets Home Depot workers to install new floor. There was one catch they didn’t mention: ‘Do they know you’re there?’
When you hire someone to do a job, there’s no telling what will happen next.
In an ideal world, the job would simply be completed without concern. However, anyone who has ever hired contractors can tell you that this is rarely the case. For example, one woman says she returned home only to find a contractor getting frisky with his wife in her kitchen. Others say they hired workers to deliver and install appliances—then discovered that the workers delivered them, but didn’t exactly install them.
Now, a woman is sharing her story about contractors doing unexpected things. But why are all the commenters telling her it’s a good sign?
What’s Going On With These Home Depot Contractors?
In a video with over 2.1 million views, TikTok user Brianna Murray (@user6352587703456) shows herself sitting in a room listening to music coming from the room next door. The song being played is “Animals” by Martin Garrix. One of the men in the other room sings along to the drop. The whole time, power tools and construction sounds can be heard.
“Guys from Home Depot came to install new hardwood floor and now this is what my house has sounded like all day,” she writes in the video’s overlay text. “Is this normal?”
In the comments, Murray says that the resultant floors looked “great.” Additionally, she says the workers enjoyed her cats and that her mother bought the workers a pizza.
Is This A Good Or Bad Sign?
In the comments section, users said that hearing music like this was a sign that the job was getting done.
“That floor is gonna be so well installed,” wrote a user.
“As a contractor I’d be more concerned if you didn’t hear music,” added another. “That’s usually when it gets serious.”
“My parents had their bathroom redone. the maestro who did the tiling BLASTED classical music. he took his time. he was a perfectionist and an artist and did incredible work,” recalled a third.
That said, some commenters wondered if this was normal. Others thought that it was rude for contractors to play loud music. So, what’s the etiquette here?
Can You Tell Your Contractors To Turn The Music Down?
From an etiquette perspective, you can absolutely tell your contractors to lower the volume of their music.
Often, crews play music at high volumes for two reasons. First, the tools they use are loud, and the music must be loud enough to be heard over them. Second, contractors often wear hearing protection—meaning any music they play has to be loud enough to be heard through earplugs.
If their music is bothering you, experts say you can simply ask them to turn it down or limit the music to certain hours of the day.
Some guides suggest asking the workers to wear headphones. However, on Reddit, several users noted that this could be a bad idea.
“Headphones aren’t a good idea since they block out the surrounding noise and make you less aware of what’s going on around you,” reads one comment. “I’ve found that most will turn the music down or off if you ask nicely if it bothers you.”
“I prefer not to use headphones so I can hear what’s going on,” says another. “Generally I’m working alone on residential sites, so it’s usually not an issue to blast the radio. If there’s multiple crews on site, usually it’s first on site gets the right of way for music. 5 different guys playing music on a speaker and their phones gets annoyng real quick.”
