A Los Angeles woman gave her audience a corporate fit check. Now everyone’s telling her she either needs to train for her heels or step down by an inch or two.

Jacki Rodriguez (@epitomeofclassic), a TikToker who posts timeless and “esoteric” fits to her page, asked her audience whether her high heels were too high during one office fit check with over 6.8 million views. Commenters quickly butted in, telling her that she was stumbling a bit too much to warrant wearing the heels again while at work.

So, what’s the most appropriate office outfit? And, what ultimately makes a high heel ‘too high’ in a professional setting?

What’s an appropriate outfit for the office?

A general rule of thumb for most office workers is that it’s better to dress nicely every day rather than just occasionally.

Properly ironed shirts and well-fitted slacks can go a long way in a corporate work environment, especially if they match or exceed the general “vibe” of the office. That’s something that Rodriguez seemed to pin down early in her career. Well-fitted slacks, turtlenecks, and flats are just one of many looks that can breeze by in an office setting while still feeling comfortable. There are also days when vintage cashmere cardigans and long skirts can make a timeless look feel effortless and fun. It’s OK to have a particular style in an office like Rodriguez does while still showing up professionally on a daily basis.

It’s worth noting that all of the rules of a regular office apply to a home office, too. Generally, it’s best to dress appropriately and professionally at home as though it’s an average work day in the office. That way, there’s never a discrepancy in team meetings or Zoom calls.

What’s the appropriate high heel height for corporate jobs?

According to sources like DecentFoot, the maximum height heel a woman should wear in an office is somewhere between 1-3 inches, depending on the office environment. More lax offices may be better for shorter heels, where corporate offices recommend or opt for a little bit more height.

One of the most important, unspoken rules of working in an office, though, is to wear an outfit that makes it easy to walk around. Most corporate fits should be comfortable, stylish, classy, and relatively laid back. That means that certain heel heights should be a no-go in professional settings, especially if they’re difficult to walk around in.

In Rodriguez’s first video, she accidentally revealed how difficult it was for her to walk around, stumbling while walking into frame for her usual fit check. Commenters pointed out that she stumbled a bit while showing off her shoes. “Stumbling through the office is too high,” one commenter said.

Any shoes or footwear that make an excessive amount of noise, can cause genuine issues with clumsiness, or just create complications in the office, are also a no-go. That means no sandals, flip flops, tennis shoes, or squeaky soles.

How was Rodriguez’s outfit?

Other than having too-high high heels, many commenters thought that her corporate fit check passed their evaluation.

Some viewers recommended that she train herself more thoroughly to walk around in that heel height, while others noticed obvious discomfort with the shoes, not her walking style.

“Squished red and irritated and for [eight hours]?” One commenter asked, while posting a photo of her visibly irritated feet that had been carrying a significant amount of strain. “No thanks.”

Another commenter added that, “If you are wobbling they look very unprofessional. Now, if you were strutting like it’s nothing then that would be different,” giving her a decisive answer to her question.

Ultimately, Rodriguez has most of her corporate fits already figured out. It’s just a stumble in work heels that may not make them “work appropriate.”
