In a video with over 351,000 views, TikToker Kelly Marie (@kellymarie475) tells viewers who think they’re having a “bad day” what happened to her.

“Yesterday, my Amazon delivery driver who was delivering cat treats, ran over and killed my cat,” she claims with a pained smile.

The caption reads, “Thanks for that @Amazon.”

What happens if Amazon drivers accidentally run over a pet?

Unfortunately, other pet owners have dealt with similar tragedy after an Amazon driver accidentally hit their furry companion.

On the r/legaladvice subreddit, one owner says an Amazon driver ran over their 12-year-old golden retriever. They claim that they heard dispatch laughing and telling the driver to leave on the security footage.

In the comments, some users suggest the next steps for the owner, including contacting Amazon to report the incident.

“Legally dogs are considered property. This means that in court your best reward you can typically expect is going to be replacement cost for your dog sometimes including medical expenses,” one suggests.

Another writes, “Talking to the police about them pursuing hit and run charges is probably your best option for making the person involved accept responsibility.”

A second U.K. family went viral after sharing footage of an Amazon van driving over their senior German Shepherd, who sustained major injuries from the accident.

The vet told the family they would either have to risk extensive surgery or put their dog down, according to the Independent. They claim that Amazon sent them a “£25 pet bed as an apology.”

Why are viewers taking sides?

Marie quickly turned off the comments on her original video after many viewers criticized her for seemingly smirking after her cat died. She stitches one of the comments and clarifies that she was simply smiling through the pain and was not happy about the situation.

“I didn’t think it would blow up the way that it has. Some of you are coming for me,” she says. “I don’t hate animals. I hate people.”

She says the irony of the cat treat delivery driver hitting her cat caused her to smile in disbelief.

“If I didn’t use humor to cope I think I’d be in a psych ward,” she continues.

Marie also addresses viewers who criticize her for letting her cat outside. She points out that cats tend to go where they please.

“Anyone that owns cats knows. You can’t force a cat to do something it doesn’t want to do,” she says. “I shouldn’t have to trap my cat indoors because people don’t watch where they’re going.”

The TikToker also shares that she obtained the Ring doorbell footage of the incident, which shows the driver backing over her cat. She says the cat began to “seize” and the driver drove away. He only stopped when her neighbors flagged him down.

“He was like, ‘Oh, sorry.’ But didn’t come back,” she says.

Marie comments that she contacted Amazon customer service, writing, “Girl icl me and Amazon customer service are going at it.”

Should owners keep cats inside?

Still, many viewers debate whether cats should be kept inside to prevent similar accidents in the future. Some agree with Marie that cats should be allowed to roam freely.

“God, I really hope you’re alright. Also of course a cat is going to go outside??? Everyone on the street where I live let’s their cat outside (mine included) like???” one writes.

Another shares, “I’ve got 3 cats, two are outdoor cats and one is an indoor cat. we couldn’t force the other two inside if we wanted to.”

However, others suggest it’s the owner’s responsibility to keep their pets safely inside, even if they want to roam.

“My cats first ever outing after me saying no for her to go out ended up in her getting run over & killed by my next door neighbour. Safe to say my others are kept indoors now,” a viewer comments.

“My cat doesn’t want to get his nails clipped or take his medication…it is my responsibility to make sure those things get done so that he is well cared for,” a second suggests. “Unfortunately, denying your pets certain things in the name of their well being is part of being a responsible pet owner.”
