‘Marty Supreme’ Star Steps Down From Next A24 Film After Fan Pushback

Odessa A’zion has dropped out of A24’s Deep Cuts and people online are all over the place about it. Social media had a lot to say when the actress was originally cast in this movie. And rightfully so.
Deep Cuts adapts Holly Brickley’s novel of the same name. The book draws on the early 2000s with two friends having a romantic relationship. All of that sounds delightful, but folks had an issue with A’zion being cast in a role for a character who was Mexican and Jewish in the novel. A’zion was set to play Zoe Gutierrez. While she’s Jewish, the star agrees that the part should go to someone more aligned with that culture.
A’zion posted on Instagram agreeing with critics. She wanted to make it clear, none of this was her intention. But, that train had already left the station in multiple ways. The Marty Supreme star says that she didn’t read the book in question and that she should have “paid more attention” before signing on the dotted line for Deep Cuts. As the 25-year-old has come to realize, a lot of folks out there had. But, there is some growth there in gauging the public reaction and choosing to do the right thing in light of the outcry.
Many social media users heard about A’zion’s casting and immediately started to link it to her new styling in recent months. On Instagram, she responded to the criticisms directly, and there probably won’t be too many folks out here mad about this now that she’s dropped out of the movie.
Odessa A’zion addresses the Deep Cuts backlash

“Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie,” the actress began. “F*** that. I’m OUT.” She then elaborated: “THANK YOU guys for bringing this to my attention. I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! This is why I love you guys.”
She continued, “I’m so sorry that this happened. It is SO important for me to let you in on how it all went down: I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting…and now that I know what I know???”
“ I never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it. That should do it! that’s not me,” A’zion added. “There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am not one of them. I can’t wait to see who it ends up being.”
What does the future look like for A’zion?
Well, in a cover story with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress is already looking forward to building on the success of Marty Supreme. Timothy Chalamet has capitalized on the fervor around the A24 movie. And, it’s natural that one of his co-stars would be looking to do the same. If A’zion has her druthers, we’re going to keep seeing her pick up roles about complicated women. Both in the orbit of goofy toxic strivers like Chalamet’s character, and on her own. Check out what she said here.
“It’s really hard after doing Marty Supreme to think about what I would do next because that was my ultimate goal,” A’zion mused. “I guess I just hope to keep playing insane women, I hope I’m never the straight man. I just want the juicy, fucked-up roles, I will play whatever insane character somebody wants me to play.”
