‘I didn’t know this was a thing!’: Woman pays $500. Then she gets $1,250 of Coach bags. Here’s how

While it might be one of the pricier luxury brands out there, Coach doesn’t always have to break the bank. If you’re smart about it, you can get items that are really good value for money. One way of doing this is by purchasing Coach’s fukubukuro mystery bag.
Fukubukuro is a Japanese New Year’s tradition. In essence, it involves a customer buying a sealed bag for a specific (usually low) price while not knowing what is actually inside it. The tradition is something Hawaii participates in.
What did she get for Coach Fukubukuro Shopping?
In a viral TikTok, user Andie Lee (@andie.lee123) delved into her mystery bag from Coach, noting that it was a men’s bag of winter clearance because all the women’s bags had sold out. When she asked a sales assistant, they revealed that some customers had been lining up for the mystery bag since 5 am.
In the end, Lee snagged a $500 mystery bag, which, the label claims, is full of products worth $1,250.
The video, which has amassed 1.5 million views, consists of her taking out each item in turn.
Her haul included a Hitch messenger bag, a Hitch cross-body bag, a travel kit, and a “ginormous” top-zip messenger bag.
Ultimately, Lee said she was “very excited” by her purchases and happy with what she got. She noted how she sometimes prefers men’s bags because they have silver and gun metal hardware rather than gold.
What did Lee say?
In an email interview with The Mary Sue, Lee said, “I did not expect my video to go as viral as it did! It has been exciting, I was glad I could share some of the culture here in Hawai’i with the New Year’s day tradition of Fukubukuro or Lucky Bag. I was also glad I could introduce my viewers to the Men’s section of Coach because a lot of them had not explored that side.”
She went on to note how the video was “well-received,” and how most viewers were “excited” by her buys and felt she got her “money’s worth” for “timeless pieces” — even if those pieces were labelled as a ‘men’s bag.’
Lee added, “Some key takeaways I would like my viewers to keep in mind: this is one time a year, within the U.S., this only happens in Hawaii, and it was a super fun experience!” She then concluded, “I shop at Coach regularly, so feel free to follow me for my unboxing, come shop with me videos, and bag styling videos.”
Commenters were envious
In the comments, users couldn’t believe Lee’s luck.
“That is sooooo worth it!” one wrote. “Or even more.”
“I am so sad I missed out on this deal!” another despaired. “I NEED all of those” a third said. ” I’m getting bored with my Coach bags.”
While a fourth added, “You got really good stuff, they are all pretty.”
And a fifth chimed in, “Hold on, this was the best one I’ve seen! I liked the men’s bag more than the woman’s that I’ve seen.”
Meanwhile, a sixth admitted, “I paid $500 for 1 purse hehehe now I know I can do a Fukubukuro bags for the same price!”
Coach Lucky Bags explained
According to one Reddit user, one of the Hawaiian branches of Coach offers two tiers of Fukubukuro bags: a $500 version and a $1,000 version.
The Redditor also claims that, usually, there is a $250 tier—but that it allegedly wasn’t an option this year. Moreover, this Reddit user says that to get your hands on these Fukubukuros, you needed to shop on January 1.
Coach didn’t immediately respond to The Mary Sue’s request for comment via email.
