‘We just won in court’: Gavin Newsom beats Trump on major Portland troop escalation standoff

On October 5, 2025, a federal judge temporarily blocked Donald Trump and his administration from deploying National Guard troops in Oregon, a move the president had persistently pushed for. This is the second ruling in the case, as Trump refused to step back after a preliminary ruling that also put a momentary stop to his deployment plans.

During the second ruling on Sunday, U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut, appointed by Donald Trump during his first term as President, took note of the unlawful nature of his activities and said:

“How could bringing in federalized National Guard from California not be in direct contravention of the TRO I issued yesterday?”

The judge’s verdict caused celebration among the opposition, especially California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has repeatedly expressed his disdain for Donald Trump and his administration. In a celebratory post on October 6, 2025, on X (previously Twitter), Newsom broke the news of Trump’s failure at court to his followers. Additionally, he took the opportunity to address Trump’s behaviour and called it for what it is, an “abuse of power.” His post read:

“BREAKING: We just won in court — again. A federal judge BLOCKED Donald Trump’s unlawful attempt to DEPLOY 300 OF OUR NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS TO PORTLAND. The court granted our request for a Temporary Restraining Order — HALTING ANY FEDERALIZATION, RELOCATION, OR DEPLOYMENT of ANY GUARD MEMBERS TO OREGON FROM ANY STATE. Trump’s abuse of power won’t stand.”

Newsom’s X post received significant criticism. While supporters of Trump were vocal in their backing for him and his government, the one’s who didn’t side with him also spoke their minds. A few individuals, however, expressed their feelings from a neutral perspective, noting that although the event was a major victory for democracy, Trump wouldn’t accept the defeat. They pointed out that he would likely try to double down and ensure his words are followed, which could even mean that he would ensure the firing of Immergut, who passed the judgment.

Now that he has been dismissed twice, what will the President’s next line of action be? Will he throw a fit, like he always does? Or will he do something more significant? One can never predict his next move.
