The Most Powerful DC Characters, Ranked

Faster than The Flash, stronger than Superman, smarter than all the Batmans combined, these juggernauts stand at the very pinnacle of power in the DC Universe. They’re so powerful that they’ve knocked the entire Justice League out of the ranking! These are the ultimate universe-breakers and reality-enders. Gods in the truest sense of the word: unstoppable, eternal, transcendent. Merciful? Maybe, if you’re lucky.
10. Eclipso

Eclipso was the original holder of the title “the Wrath of God” before he was replaced by an even more powerful being on this list (you’ll meet him soon enough). Eclipso’s resume is impressive; he was the cause of the Great Flood. Yes, that flood, the biblical deluge that forced Noah to build an ark. Essentially an angel, Eclipso was cast out of Heaven after rebelling against God. While he was free to terrorize the mortal realm for longer than mortals would have liked, he was eventually sealed inside a black diamond called The Heart of Darkness – now that’s as heavy metal as it gets.
9. Anti-Monitor

A god-like being that holds dominion over an antimatter universe that sits parallel to our own, the Anti-Monitor is one of the most powerful beings the Justice League has ever faced. After learning about our universe, the Anti-Monitor sought to conquer it as he did his own. Like many a conqueror from ages past, he was eventually bested and exiled. Napoleon Bonaparte was shipped off to Corsica, the Anti-Monitor was hurled into space by Superboy Prime — history is ever doomed to repeat itself.
8. The Spectre

The being that stole the “Wrath of God” title from Eclipso, The Spectre is an all powerful contender. He was once a cop in Gotham City, but after being murdered by criminals, he was reincarnated as an angelic being. Granted carte blanche by God to punish the sort of evil-doers that killed him in the first place, The Spectre can bend reality to his will, doling out divine miracles and punishments in equal measure.
7. Mr. Mxyzptlk

Aside from having the most powerfully confusing name in the entire DCU, Mr. Mxyzptlk is an extradimensional force to be reckoned with. He hails from the fifth dimension and often picks fights with Superman out of sheer boredom. He is immortal, invulnerable, and insanely rich. He can control fire, ice, gravity, the weather, and time — I’d have an easier time listing the things he doesn’t have power over. But despite all that power, he can’t think of anything better to do than be a nuisance.
6. The Word

The Word is quite literally the word of God – the first word the Creator ever spoke when shaping the universe. Since the beginning of time, The Word has been responsible for enforcing the will of God by any means necessary. A transcendental being, he cannot be harmed whatsoever – a trait he uses to get any divine job done. Even The Spectre is afraid of this guy.
5. Michael Demiurgos

Also known as Saint Michael the Archangel, Michael Demiurgos is the second son of God and the twin brother of Lucifer. An archangel, Michael is one of the most powerful beings in existence, second only to his divine father Himself. Michael possesses the demiurgic power of God, meaning that he can shape the cosmos as he sees fit. An almighty force that battles nigh-omnipotent beings on the regular, Michael was able to subdue even The Spectre, the ghostly apparition that serves as the embodiment of God’s will. Michael also led the forces of Heaven against Lucifer during the angelic uprising, but the rebel angel was able to escape before Michael could land a killing blow — call it a divine tie.
4. Lucifer Morningstar

Lucifer Morningstar is the twin brother of Michael, known to many on Earth as Satan, the Prince of Darkness – but sometimes he can be a pretty good guy! Alongside Michael, Lucifer was instructed by God to create the entire DC multiverse. Everything that is, was, and ever shall be was made by his hand and the hand of his brother – to call Lucifer powerful would be the understatement of the aeons. This archangel is immortal, nigh-omnipotent, and can summon all of the forces of Hell to his side in battle. Sorry, Mr. Mxyzptlk — you just can’t compete.
3. The Great Evil Beast

The Great Evil Beast is the origin of all darkness, a shadowy doppelgänger of the regular God. Also known as the Great Darkness, the Beast is equal in power to the God of Light in every way, but exists in a realm outside of the DC universe. The inspiration for The Beast likely came from Zoroastrianism, an ancient religion similar to the Abrahamic faiths — except it features two all-powerful divinities. Reality is balanced by a God of Light and a God of Darkness, both of whom are infinitely powerful yet exist separately from one another. In the DC Universe, the God of Darkness eventually merged with the God of Light after a heart-to-heart with Swamp Thing at the Gates of Heaven. Apparently, Swamp Thing is the ultimate spiritual counselor.
2. The Presence

The Presence is, quite literally, God — the being that created the DC Universe we know and love. Responsible for giving power to (almost) every other entry on this list, The Presence created Michael Demiurgos and Lucifer Morningstar, and is the source of the divine abilities of The Spectre and The Word. Despite having the power to do anything, The Presence rarely intervenes in mortal affairs. He mostly sits on the cosmic sidelines, mulling over whether or not to fix the universe or crumple it up and throw it into the metaphysical trash. Presence, if you’re listening, I hope you choose the former.
1. Monitor-Mind the Overvoid

Yes, there is something more powerful than God in the DC universe. One could argue that this being is the God of God – a mind-blowing concept! Monitor-Mind the Overvoid is a sentient void that sits outside of creation. If the universe is shaped by God’s words, then Monitor-Mind is essentially the blank page on which those words are written. It is the source of all creativity, and according to Grant Morrison, it is the true God of the DC universe. One could argue that Grant Morrison himself could also qualify for the title, but he’s much too humble to say so.
