Marvel studios recently announced two new Avengers blockbusters, The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, but the real secret here is whose steady directorial hand will turn these embryonic ideas into box office successes?
Let’s start with who it won’t be: the Russo brothers. In spite of fans’ high hopes, Marvel Studio’s Kevin Feige confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that the Russo brothers will not be returning to carry the Marvel banner to glory. So who will answer the call?
So, who might direct the next installments?
Let’s start with Kang Dynasty because we have an answer! According to the Hollywood Reporter, this little number will be directed by none other than Daniel Destin Cretton, the director of 2021’s box office smash Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Hell yeah. The rest of the cast list has not been officially released yet, but I have a pretty good feeling that Jonathan Majors will reappear as Kang. It’s in the title, after all.
As for Secret Wars, there’s a little rumor going around that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s Ryan Coogler is on the short list to direct the film. How do I know? A lil’ birdy told me. And that birdy’s name is James Clement, the host of The Weekly Planet Podcast. During the “Hot Scoop or Shot of Poop” (love the name) segment of a recent episode, he said this:
“And Ryan Coogler, here’s another scoop, Mason, is at the very least one of the directors, is currently in talks for Secret Wars. Which makes a lot of sense and yeah, the source here says, this is a reliable source, this person says ‘a fairly obvious choice.’ And it is. That makes sense.”
But who knows? Marvel Studios could end up giving us a charmingly awkward and impeccably symmetrical Wes Anderson directed version of Secret Wars. You never can tell.
