Thor: Love and Thunder is gearing up to be a big deal for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The new Taika Waititi movie is jammed packed with stars like Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, and more—and, of course, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. But it has also has taken its sweet time in giving us absolutely any kind of content from the movie.
After nearly a full month of fans asking where the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder is, we were finally gifted an early morning release of the trailer for Taika Waititi’s latest entry. And what we really got was an actual idea of what this movie is about, other than just knowing the cast list.
While not a full trailer, the official teaser for the movie gave us a taste of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster with the power of Mjölnir, a bit about what Valkyrie is up to as King of Asgard, and of course what Thor is doing with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Thor’s retired?
The biggest shock out of the trailer is that it seems like Thor wants out of being a superhero. I can’t say that I blame him; he did have a rough go of it since coming to Earth. He watched his brother die (even though we know he’s alive again), he saw the people of Asgard get destroyed not once but twice, and he failed (in his eyes) at killing Thanos.
And all of that was just within the last few years, not to mention the loss of his mother and father prior to Hela coming back and the revelation that he has a sister, too. It’s been a lot for Thor to take in, so a drastic step of not wanting to be a superhero anymore isn’t that shocking.
But it is interesting to see how the trailer depicts his new retired era. Thor is simply walking away from a battle with the Guardians, taking a ship and just trying to live his life away from the battle—or so it seems. Marvel has a habit of using footage in trailers in a way that obscures its true meaning. But what all that leads to at the end of this teaser seems to be a new Mjölnir and a new, worthy Jane?
Thor and Jane
The love between Thor and Jane has been a tough road because the last we saw of them together, she was sick on Asgard and clearly hid away after that. We haven’t seen her since Thor: The Dark World (unless you count her briefly showing up in Avengers: Endgame), and so, Thor seeing Jane in the trailer is something that has a been a long time coming for the two. How will their relationship will pan out, though? That’s going to be an … interesting thing to see play out.
Thor: Love and Thunder comes out this July, and we can’t wait to see what’s really going on in this trailer.
