When Will ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ Release on Streaming?

Sonic can't get here fast enough.

Movies based on video games have proven to be risky business. Many movies based on popular video games flop in theaters rather than becoming hits themselves. However Sonic the Hedgehog hit theaters in 2020 and broke the mold. Not only did the film bring a beloved Sega character to life, but it also brought a story with heart and hilarious jokes into the mix.

Since the first film arrived, fans have expected a sequel. A scene at the end of the movie showed Sonic’s video game sidekick, the adorable double-tailed fox named Tails, popping up in the version of Earth that Sonic lives in. On April 8, 2022, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 officially releases in theaters, giving us more of our favorite little blue guy.

Streaming Release

The release of the movie is very exciting. However, if don’t enjoy venturing out to theaters, you’re probably wondering when you can watch it from the comfort of your own couch. So far, there is no official streaming release date. Looking at the standard release schedule of theater to streaming services, the wait time is normally about 45 days—sometimes sooner. I would expect the streaming date to be around May 23rd.

Being that Sonic is a Paramount Pictures film, it will release directly onto their own streaming platform, Paramount Plus, before going anywhere else. Currently, Paramount Plus has the first Sonic movie, so you can watch that until the new one is available.

It may seem like a long time to wait for the movie. Based on early reviews, the movie sounds super cool. The return of Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as the villain Doctor Eggman (possibly his best role) is enough to have everyone in my household desperately wanting to see it. With the addition of Idris Elba voicing the bad guy Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails (who has been voicing the character in video games since 2014), it is bound to be as fun as playing the video game itself.
