‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s’ Kaiji Tang and Lex Lang on Discovering the History of Their Characters Through the Film

"Gojo's silliness comes from a place of kinda being a lonely guy."

When I wrote my review of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 I mentioned how Yuta Okkotsu isn’t the only one dealing with a loss and how “loss” doesn’t always mean death, but also separation. I didn’t go into details because it’s a spoiler, but when you get the chance to interview Kaiji Tang (Satoru Gojo) and Lex Lang (Suguru Geto), you’re gonna end up stepping into spoiler territory.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 focuses primarily on Yuta, but it also delves into the lives of other characters we’ve already met in the series. This includes the series villain, Geto, who we haven’t actually seen in battle yet. Geto is the kind of villain who orchestrates his plans by giving others orders, meaning he either can’t fight worth a damn but is strategic as all hell, or is extremely dangerous in battle WHILE being strategic at the same time. The movie proves that he’s the latter, and while doing so, it gives us one of the most surprising reveals in Jujutsu Kaisen so far (in the anime, at least, the manga is another story).

It turns out the overpowered goofball, Gojo, has history with Geto. Not just any history, though. These two were friends—BEST friends, according to Gojo, and the ONLY best friend he’s ever had. You can tell that it’s a relationship that still weighs heavily on his mind, and it makes you wonder what the hell this means for the future of the anime series because, well, the main villain is close to one of the main characters! As a longtime anime watcher, I usually suspect that a character like Gojo has more to him than he lets on. He’s a jokester with more power than GOD, which I tend to read as “I have a lot of secrets.”

Tang and Lang talked about their characters, what it was like to finally get more details about them, and how tragic it is that Gojo’s one and only friend is the villain of the series. Seriously, what a fantastic plot point to get before we dive into season two in 2023.

The video interview

Stick around until the end for cats. No, I’m not kidding, there are cats.
