Emma Corrin and Josh O'Connor in The Crown (2016)

The Crown Shares First Look at Our New Charles and Diana

Very generous on Charles.

The Crown is really good at casting. Even when you are unsure how it will come together, somehow they manage to get it right. With the casting for the next incarnation of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, they have done it again.

Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki will be playing the divorced royal couple, in casting that is very generous to Prince Charles and really nails the sad but elegant energy of the late Princess of Wales. West and Debicki are replacing Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor, who played the roles in season 4. Honestly, it will be interesting to see if they can be matched because man did they nail it, with Corrin winning a Golden Globe for their performance.

In the 5th season, we will be seeing the divorce and the lead-up to Diana’s death which will provide a lot of rich material for all involved, including Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II. No doubt show creator and writer Peter Morgan will be dusting off his script for The Queen to make sure he can nail all the great parts again.

Princess Diana’s legacy has stood the test of time and while The Crown has been successful from the start, there is no denying that her presence in the series has brought in a new crop of people who may have had no experience with The Crown, but love Diana. Plus, as her two sons, Prince William and Harry, continue to be in the news it provides very organic publicity for the show.

I am most familiar with Debicki from her appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, where she played the supporting role of Ayesha, the leader of the Sovereign people, and even then she left a very captivating impression. Of the main cast, she is the one I’m most excited about.

As for Dominic West as Prince Charles, they have certainly styled him to look the part and the choice of him being cast is certainly interesting considering he was just recently in the news for his own high-profile alleged affair. Maybe it was just method acting or something, but it will certainly be something people might keep in mind as we watch his Charles deal with the breakdown of his own marriage. Especially with Charles’ royal parents both being deeply disappointed in the whole thing.

The new season is expected to premiere in 2022, following all the delays due to COVID-19. Considering the U.K. hadn’t been doing great with vaccinations and COVID (join the club) that is not a surprise and the priority is to remain safe.
