REJOICE! We’re Getting a New Show From the Brilliant Comedic Minds of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement

The creative minds of Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi have brought joy to so many throughout the years. From working together on Flight of the Conchords through their work together on What We Do in the Shadows, they’re a comedy powerhouse duo and I love them both very much. And now, we’re getting another team-up show between Clement and Waititi and good, we deserve this.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Clement revealed that the two were working on a long-form episodic series that is an action-comedy:

Taika and I are working on a new series right now which we just started writing. I can’t tell you much about it yet, but what’s fun about it and what makes it exciting for me is it’s something I always wanted to do which is long-form episodes in a sitcom. It’s an action-adventure comedy. It’ll be different from what I’ve usually done. I’ve made three sitcoms now, and I hope this one is still funny but more of an adventure series.

What this means though is that further exploration of the world of What We Do in the Shadows might be put on hold to focus on their new show together. Clement said: “We have talked about things in the past but I don’t know how realistic it is. We’re pausing on [Wellington Paranormal], we’re not sure we’ll be back for a fifth season.”

After season 1 of the spinoff series of What We Do in the Shadows, Taika Waititi took a step back—understandably so, as he’s is one of the busiest men in Hollywood, but it led to Clement heading things up on his own before stepping down after the second season.

Clement and Waititi have made careers for themselves of working with friends or bringing their same creative teams in for their movies. I love seeing a wild Rhys Darby in one of their projects, but it also is clearly something that the two enjoy doing. Clement went on to talk about not having Taika Waititi during season 2 and that process of working together:

It’s definitely easier to work with people you know because you know what the other needs. I missed Taika on season 2 of What We Do in the Shadows because it was just me saying, ‘This is what we need to do!’ When he was there, there were two of us. So now I’m looking forward to working with him again.

I’m excited for Clement and Waititi to work together again. I’m excited them to give us this action-adventure show, and I’m excited to have more moment in interviews like this one where Clement causally brings up a story about Taika Waititi’s IG-11 that instantly made me cry?!

My son and I were recently watching the season 1 finale of The Mandalorian and there was a New Zealand robot and I was laughing because it had a New Zealand accent. My son didn’t know why I was laughing but I told him that at one point, we wouldn’t have had that: a robot that talks like us. That was Taika’s robot, of course.

Whatever this show has in store for us, I’m ready for it to consume my every waking thought.
