Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel really had the nerve to tweet out her support for the LGBTQ community while her party has over 200 anti-LGBTQ bills in the works, according to the Human Rights Campaign. 106 of these bills target transgender people, robbing them of life-saving healthcare while pushing a narrative that effectively bans transgender girls and women from school sports. And who’s leading the charge? Republicans are.

Back in May 2021, the Human Rights Campaign laid out the anti-LGBTQ bills that have so far been enacted into law, including:

  • 7 anti-trans sports bans in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Montana, Tennessee, and West Virginia (We not can add Florida to this list!)
  • 1 anti-trans medical care ban bill in Arkansas
  • 4 religious refusals bills, including in North Dakota, South Dakota, and two bills in Arkansas
  • 2 anti-LGTBQ bills in Tennessee and Montana
  • 1 sham “hate crimes” bill in Arkansas
  • 1 anti-all comers bill in North Dakota
  • 1 anti-tans birth certificate bill in Montana

That isn’t even taking into consideration the bills that are on Republican governors’ desks waiting for approval, like bills to restrict more students from participating in school sports if they are trans, bills to restrict the teaching of LGBTQ people and history in classrooms, and the allowance of discrimination against LGBTQ people based on a person’s religious beliefs.

Alphonso David, the Human Rights Campaign President warned:

This crisis cannot be ignored and necessitates concrete action from all those with the ability to speak out. These bills are not only harmful and discriminatory, but also represent a failure in our democracy and the commitment elected officials make to protect and serve their constituents. Now is not the time for reluctance or passivity, it is time to take urgent action to protect the basic rights and humanity of LGBTQ people in America.

And Twitter followed all this up by pointing out left and right the way that Republicans have treated the LGBTQ community while not mincing words!
