Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff

Avengers: Endgame and the Magical Time-Traveling Wigs

Natasha Romanoff doesn’t exactly have the most consistent hair in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Movie to movie, her hair seems to change to fit whoever is directing, sometimes even in the same film, because that’s just how it has been. For years, the MCU maybe hasn’t been the kindest to Natasha as a character, but as CBR points out, maybe her hair in Avengers: Endgame is a way to track the timeline.

From looking at each look from the trailer, it is clear that Natasha, like Steve Rogers without his beard, goes through some changes throughout the years following the events of Infinity War.

First, we have the short blonde bob.

In Infinity War, Natasha debuted the blonde look. While a fun change from the redhead we’ve come to know, it more than likely became a thing because Steve, Natasha, and Sam were all on the run from the government, so changing from her well-known red locks probably helped them. (The best part of this is that Sam Wilson didn’t change a single thing about himself, so everyone would have figured out who he was and who everyone in his party was.)

But the blonde hair continued throughout the movie, meaning that she still has the bob throughout the beginning of Endgame, and if rumors about time travel are true, it might help us understand where in the timeline we are.

After the bob, we have the blonde-ish ponytail.

We see a glimpse of Natasha’s hair in this training scene, practicing to take on Thanos with a gun, which … lol Natasha. It seems as if her hair is still a little bit blonde at this point, growing out, and maybe there are just her red roots growing in. Whatever this hairstyle is, it is clearly after she had her blonde bob and is later in the film, whether months or years after the snap.

But then there’s the red ponytail.

With a few blonde streaks, Natasha is basically back to her roots, the fiery red hair back in full force. This hairdo is clearly after (at least) a few years have passed, her hair longer and completely changed.

So, what does this all mean? It just means that you can probably track the timeline of all the events through the movie by her hairstyles, and that, with the trailers supposedly only showing the first 20 minutes of the movie, a lot of time passes during that portion.

Maybe that’s why her hair has been all over the place throughout all these years. If they’re going back movie to movie, taking on all their past foes to defeat Thanos, they have to differentiate between each movie, and … weirdly enough, you can do that through Natasha’s hair.

Personally, the blonde bob is my favorite, because it actually made it look like Natasha was in hiding. Can’t say the same for Sam, but at least Natasha Romanoff put in the effort.
