Things We Saw Today: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Will Get a Sixth Season

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was by no means a sure bet for renewal at ABC, but the show squeaked by under the ax and will be returning.

ABC canceled Marvel’s other show at the network, Inhumans, which surprised exactly no one (Lockjaw, we hardly knew ye), but Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was a toss-up going into the renewal/cancellation mill.

Deadline points out that although Coulson & Co. have low “live” ratings—people tuning in for appointment television—the show “is a strong DVR gainer and an even stronger international seller for ABC Studios, as well as a marketing platform for Marvel.”

In short, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has a lot more fans than its surface ratings suggest, and its potential to reference and occasionally intersect with events that are happening in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe makes the show even more precious unto Marvel. I’m glad that the Agents will have the opportunity play around in the sandbox of possibilities that Infinity War opened up.

I saw Solo today, and will have a review up for you tomorrow afternoon. What’d you see on your end?
