Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh Feud in First Trailer for Crazy Rich Asians

The first trailer for the much-anticipated Crazy Rich Asians has arrived!

Directed by Jon M. Chu, the movie promises to be a fresh and memorable romantic comedy. The party scenes are on par with The Great Gatsby and from all the emotional looks and passionate pleas I just know I’m going to love it. The synopsis reads:

“Based on the novel by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians centers on American-born Chinese economics professor Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), who accompanies her boyfriend (Henry Golding) to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding only to get thrust into the lives of Asia’s rich and famous. She discovers that her boyfriend comes from a ridiculously wealthy family with a dark past and that every woman wants him.”

The trailer highlights the challenges that Rachel experiences trying to fit into Nick’s life in Singapore, mainly the unsubtle hostility and disapproval of his mother Eleanor Sung-Young, played by the legendary Michelle Yeoh. The amazing cast also includes Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Jimmy O. Yang, and more.

The upcoming film is incredibly exciting not only because of the prominently Asian cast, but also because we know that it almost didn’t happen this way. Author Kevin Kwan said in one interview that a producer who approached him about a film suggested changing the protagonist Rachel into a white woman—erasing any kind of interesting interactions between a Chinese-American woman encountering Singapore. Thankfully, Kwan refused, saying “Well, you’ve missed the point completely.”

Crazy Rich Asians hits theaters August 17th.
