Screengrab of Eline Powell from Freeform's teaser trailer for "Siren"

Am I Going to Love or Hate Freeform’s New Killer Mermaid Show?

Freeform has released a teaser trailer for Siren, their upcoming murder-mermaid series. According to Deadline, the series is set in Bristol Cove, a seaside town where local legend has it that mermaids once roamed the waters. The town is then “turned upside down when a mysterious girl (Eline Powell) appears and begins wreaking havoc upon the small fishing town. Using their resources, marine biologists Ben (Alex Roe) and Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) must work together to find out who and what drove this primal hunter of the deep sea to land, and are there more like her out there?”

The teaser is full of ominous hints about the siren, with characters saying things like, “We need to be careful” or “I’m drawn to her” or “She is extremely violent.” And given that she’s described as a “primal hunter of the deep sea” in the show description, I can’t wait for her to just lay waste to a bunch of humans.

That said, this is definitely one of those projects that will either be 100% glory or 100% garbage. After all, there’s plenty of potential for all the things I love:

  • Queer women kissing
  • Mermaids being real
  • Mermaids attacking
  • Small towns with tourist industries built around folklore
  • Murderous women taking revenge on the men who want to capture or hurt them

But it also has plenty of potential to go straight for the problematic route:

  • Beware the sexy silent child-woman
  • Beware the evil bisexual whose sexuality is a ruse/weapon
  • Beware the powerful woman, she must be contained
  • You thought this story was about a woman, but she’s just the object the male protagonist is fascinated by!

Freeform also put out a full-length trailer last April, which you can see below:

Based on a story by Eric Wald and Dean White, who both serve as executive producers, and with Emily Whitesell  (Finding Carter) as both showrunner and executive producer, Siren will premiere on Freeform on March 29, 2018.

Based on these two trailers, what do you think of Siren?
