Things We Saw Today: The Focus for the 2018 Women’s March Is “Power to the Polls”

Recommended Videos

The Women’s March is back this year, and the theme for 2018 is Power to the Polls. Hundreds of thousands of women are marching across the country today, and tomorrow, January 21, in Las Vegas, Nevada, they’ll launch a yearlong, nationwide voter registration initiative.

“The national voter registration tour will target swing states,” reads their website, “to register new voters, engage impacted communities, harness our collective energy to advocate for policies and candidates that reflect our values, and collaborate with our partners to elect more women and progressives candidates to office. The coordinated campaign will build upon Women’s March’s ongoing work uplifting the voices and campaigns of the nation’s most marginalized communities to create transformative social and political change.”

“Women’s March has created a powerful movement that has ignited thousands of activists and new leaders,” said Tamika D. Mallory, co-president of Women’s March. “In 2018, we must turn our work into action ahead of the midterms. This new initiative will address voter registration and voter suppression head on. We marched for justice in DC, we created our plan in Detroit and now we’re bringing the power of the polls to Nevada.”

Below are just a few videos and images of the crowds from today’s marches, held on the one-year anniversary of Trump’s inauguration.

  • The Atlantic recently published a great piece by Julie Beck about the ways that songs, movies, and TV shows often normalize abusive relationships, suggesting that “romance requires a man’s desire, but not necessarily a woman’s.” And these fictional romances can influence real-life ones. “When living out their own romantic narratives,” she wrote, “people often, consciously or not, compare them to the love stories they’ve already been told. When tales like these pile up, they can leach into our minds and relationships like radiation.”
