Kendrick Lamar Will Pen Black Panther‘s New Anthem in Upcoming Film

Recommended Videos

Grammy-award winner and current rap G.O.A.T, Kendrick Lamar, will be recording a new original song for the upcoming Black Panther film—just another reason why it is the most anticipated film of next year.

During San Deigo Comic-Con, the song “DNA” was included in the Black Panther trailer that played in Hall H, a sight I was not blessed to see, but I will now have waking fantasies about how amazing it was.

Both Coogler and actor Chadwick Boseman (who plays Black Panther in the film) said they felt a personal attachment to “DNA,” leading to its appearance in the trailer.

“The lyrics are amazing — a lot of Kendrick’s are,” Coogler told the Los Angeles Times in July. “It’s actually oddly literal for our trailer’s purposes — and I think a lot of the cultural things we’re dealing with in Wakanda are in the zeitgeist in the African American community.” (via Polygon)

Lamar apparently hid a tease for this in his most recent video, “Love,” from the incredible album DAMN, which of course someone found and turned into a dope GIF post-haste.

Words cannot describe how excited I am for this new development. The music in the Black Panther trailer has been top notch, with Run the Jewels’ “Legend Has It” in the first trailer and “Bagbak” by Vince Staples in the second. I am hoping that in addition to Lamar, we can also get some great female MC’s in the soundtrack: Lauryn Hill, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Janelle Monáe, SZA, H.E.R, Erykah Badu. Black Panther is a film that promises to show equally strong black men and women, so I would love to get some great female artists to shine alongside their male counterparts.

Hell, I’m sure the Dora Milaje train to “Bodack Yellow.”
