There’s something so delightful about the superhero themes that embrace all the cartoon-y delight of the characters. That’s not to say I don’t adore the brilliant, Hans Zimmer scores or the Wonder Woman riff that immediately awakens some primordial desire to punch within me, but you can’t deny the joy of hearing the TV Wonder Woman theme and the endearing idea of these characters in a campy, silly sitcom.
This Spider-Man mashup, similarly, gives Tom Holland’s Spider-Man a 1970s opening with appropriate freeze frames and special appearances. Vimeo user Mike Dent who’s made other mashups including this Rogue One/GUNDAM video combines Toei Company’s 1978 Spider-Man series opening with footage from the more recent Spider-Man: Homecoming. The best part? Dent includes Leopardon, the giant robot that the Japanese Spider-Man piloted to fight monsters (that was also a ship).
The Japanese series had little to nothing in common with the Marvel series save for the costume, where the protagonist is a 22-year-old motocross racer who receives his Spider-powers from an alien and fights an evil alien group. However, it had many of its own charms and Leopardon goes on to be an influence on Super Sentai and Power Rangers. Here’s the original opening for comparison, and don’t try and tell me that song isn’t still the catchiest thing ever:
