Electric Dreams Come True: Janelle Monáe Joins Philip K. Dick’s Sci-Fi Anthology Series

Recommended Videos

Janelle Monáe, an artist and actress with so much presence and style that we’ve always thought of her as a otherworldly space queen, has joined the new anthology series Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams as the villain for an episode titled “Autofac” opposite Black Mass‘ Juno Temple.

The series is based on short stories from the science fiction author. From Deadline, here’s the synopsis for “Autofac,” which was written by Pacific Rim‘s Travis Beacham and will be directed by American Odyssey‘s Peter Horton:

“Despite society and the world as we know it having collapsed, a massive, automatic product-manufacturing factory continues to operate according to the principles of consumerism – humans consume products to be happy, and in order to consume continuously, they must be denied freedom of choice and free will. When a small band of rebels decide to shut down the factory, they discover they may actually be the perfect consumers after all.”

The Moonlight and Hidden Figures actress will play an Autofac representative named Alexis and Temple a rebel named Emily, with Jay Paulson and David Lyons also appearing.

With the many sci-fi anthology series currently out now, from Black Mirror to Dimension 404, it’s exciting to see more and more of our favorite actors do genre work. Considering the ways in which Monáe’s music references and builds on works like Metropolis I’m very excited and curious to watch “Autofac.”

Electric Dreams airs later this year in the UK and will be on Amazon Prime in the United States. Are you going to check it out?
