Rey and Finn look dumbfounded together.

I Choked on My Coffee Listening to Star Wars Characters Sing Smash Mouth’s “All Star” So You Don’t Have To

But I encourage you to listen anyway.

Hey now, you’re an all-Star Wars.

Yeah, look, fine, I know that wasn’t the best pun I’ve written here on TMS, but it fit so well that I couldn’t resist, okay? Geez. But I mean, no matter how that pun was, everything else pales in comparison to the power of this cover of Smash Mouth’s infinitely memeable “All Star” sung by  Star Wars characters. I don’t know what it is that brought the internet into this habit of taking tons of microcuts out of movies and news reports in order to re-order them to make celebrities and politicians sing weird songs, but I am okay with all of it.

I’m not going to lie: the cut with Rey yelling “Finn!” for “finger” damn near killed me. No, really! I was drinking coffee and it almost made me spit-take, but I didn’t want to spit out my coffee (coffee is expensive in the San Francisco Bay Area, okay), so it ended up in this weird limbo between my windpipe and my esophagus (I think that’s called the throat, Jessica) and luckily it wasn’t searingly hot, but it was hot enough and I coughed like, everywhere.

I mean, if I had to choose the one most plausible death out of the least plausible deaths I could imagine for myself, choking on coffee listening to Star Wars characters sing Smash Mouth’s “All Star” seems like it would be my number one draft pick. Like, if I really had to bet on it, it’d have something to do with Smash Mouth’s “All Star” being sung in some capacity. The Star Wars characters are just, like, the most on-brand for me, you know?

Frankly, if choking on coffee doesn’t cement my TMS beat as “the one who covers weird internet songs and memes,” then I don’t know what will. I’ll never be able to tell you why it’s so important to me, it just is.

Oh, right. About the video. It’s neat, and it was created by the folks over at The Tonight Show. It’s delightful, it really is, and I can’t wait for when they come out with another version featuring the Star Wars characters singing “Smooth” by Santana featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty fame off the hit album Supernatural. I feel the world is at a great loss for every day we don’t have the Star Wars characters singing “Smooth” by Santana featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty fame off the hit album Supernatural.

Would you feel better if we had the Star Wars characters singing “Smooth” by Santana featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty fame off the hit album Supernatural?
