Time for Cautious Optimism: Avatar 2 Will Supposedly Start Shooting This Fall

After much delay, it looks like James Cameron is finally getting the ball rolling on those Avatar sequels. Most recently, he admitted that we would not be seeing one before 2018. Even so, Sigourney Weaver, who played Dr. Grace Augustine in the original film, says they will begin shooting this fall.

“We’re starting training, and we’re starting—hmm, I probably can’t say anything. We will be actually shooting it by the fall,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

The first film, often described as “FernGully in space,” was released on December 18, 2009 and currently sits as the highest grossing film of all time worldwide. In 2011, Cameron said he was working on a sequel expected to arrive in 2014 but that date came and went. After that, he announced four intended sequels to be released back-to-back. According to the Titanic director, that’s the reason for all the delay.

“What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases. So we’re not making Avatar 2. We’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It’s an epic undertaking. It’s not unlike building the Three Gorges dam. So I know where I’m going to be for the next eight years of my life. It’s not an unreasonable time frame if you think about it,” he explained.

As for this one, we don’t have any plot details yet but we do know that Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will also be reprising their roles. The script to the first sequel has been completed and, apparently, it’s really good.  “I’m telling you, these scripts are so amazing, I’m not worried about [disappointing fans] at all,” Weaver added. “Am I worried about how we’re going to bring them to life? Yes, because they’re so ambitious. They’re so worth it. They’re well worth waiting for. I’m not worried about that at all. We’re trying to get it done as quickly as possible.”
