Aubrey Plaza Maces a Bride, Holds a Dog, and Wins My Heart in Ingrid Goes West’s First Trailer

The first trailer for the social media dark comedy Ingrid Goes West is here, and it looks like a wild ride with a fantastically expressive performance from Aubrey Plaza. I mean, you can’t really get more brazen than macing an Instagram bride. Here’s the official synopsis:

Following the death of her mother and a series of self-inflicted setbacks, young Ingrid Thorburn (Aubrey Plaza) escapes a humdrum existence by moving out West to befriend her Instagram obsession and LA socialite Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen). After a quick bond is forged between these unlikeliest of friends, the façade begins to crack in both women’s lives — with comically malicious results.

Directed by Matt Spicer, who wrote the movie with David Branson Smith, Ingrid Goes West begins with what looks like a scene out of Black Mirror’s “Nosedive,” minus the futuristic technology. Just as we saw Bryce Dallas Howard’s carefully crafted social media image fall apart in the most chaotic and unflattering way, the trailer begins with Plaza’s Ingrid out for blood as she pepper sprays a woman at her #Perfect wedding.

While I generally approach movies about the perils women face from social media with caution as they can come across as very PSA-y or full of patronizing ideas of female vanity (especially when written by men), Ingrid Goes West has been getting positive reviews with many praising the film’s sharp humor and Plaza’s performance. The cast also includes Wyatt Russell, O’Shea Jackson, Jr., and Billy Mangussen. The tangible awkwardness of that final trailer scene already has me sold with the subtle expressions on Plaza’s face as she meets her friend Taylor’s (Olsen) weird brother (Magnussen). Are you going to check it out?
