General Leia Organa from Star Wars and Wonder Woman

Star Wars, Sequels, and Superheroes Are the Most Anticipated Movies of 2017

Plus, Wonder Woman Has All the DC Hype

Fandango has released the results of their annual “Most Anticipated Movies” poll, and it’s all superheroes, sequels and…live-action Disney adaptations. Star Wars: Episode VIII tops the list for 2017, just as Rogue One topped the 2016 survey and The Force Awakens topped 2015’s. Marvel and Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 takes the #2 spot, Spider-Man: Homecoming is #5, and DC’s Wonder Woman and Justice League are #4 and #6 respectively. In a musical coup, Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast beat out Spidey and the DC Extended Universe to come in at #3.

Some of the more exciting news out of this survey is the hype around Wonder Woman. In addition to her solo film’s high ranking, she was also the survey’s Most Anticipated Comic Book Character, beating out Spider-Man and Baby Groot, and actress Gal Gadot was the top Rising Female Movie Star. While I’m pumped to see the anticipation around the Amazon Princess, it wasn’t hard to see this coming. Wonder Woman is one of DC’s most recognizable properties, the official trailer made a big stir, and she was already the primary draw for Batman V. Superman back in 2016. Given all that, it makes a lot of sense that more viewers are looking forward to Wonder Woman than Justice League.

Plus, fans have been hungry for a female-led superhero movie for some time now. (Marvel, if you’re disappointed that Thor: Ragnarok didn’t hit the Top 10, maybe consider what your fans have told you about a Black Widow movie?)

The rest of the Top 10 are mostly sequels and superhero films, with the exception of Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast adaptation. Below are the Top 10, and the full Top 30 can be seen on Fandango’s website.

  1. Star Wars: Episode VIII
  2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
  3. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast
  4. Wonder Woman
  5. Spider-Man: Homecoming
  6. Justice League
  7. The Fate of the Furious
  8. Fifty Shades Darker
  9. Logan
  10. Despicable Me 3
