Title Designer Dan Perri Calls Rogue One’s Title Crawl Omission “Foolish”

Recommended Videos

Rogue One was the first Star Wars movie to go without an opening crawl, instead going for a conventional title opening. To some, abandoning the staple was an act of little consequence that distanced the new films from the originals. For others, like title designer Dan Perri, the man who worked on the iconic crawl for months to earn George Lucas’ approval, the omission was a misstep.

The Hollywood Reporter shared an interview Perri had with Heat Vision, where he said, “Frankly, it is a huge mistake, because the image is so iconic and it’s so important to tens of millions, hundreds of millions of fans. I couldn’t imagine it starting without that. It’s foolish.” Perri also states that he hasn’t Rogue One or another Star Wars films since the original.

I didn’t mind the lack of an opening crawl too much, but I also didn’t watch Star Wars until I was older so I wasn’t especially attached. A number of dedicated fans have made their own opening crawls, which are worth checking out if you felt like something was missing. What did you think about Rogue One omitting the opening crawl?
