The Circle’s Trailer Looks Like a Super Charged Episode of Black Mirror

Tom Hanks and Emma Watson are teaming up for a dramatic thriller about privacy and technology, but something looks … oddly familiar? After watching the trailer and hearing that eerie soundtrack by Danny Elfman, I can’t help but think that this movie feels like a big screen version of a Black Mirror episode.

The British sc-fi series exposes the dark side of technology through terrifying episodes that, if you really think about it, could actually come to fruition in the near future if we allow it. The Circle falls into a similar category, with the focus on allowing technology to invade our privacy a la Facebook or Google Plus.

Hanks (or Hanx, as he signs off on every tweet) stars as the founder of the largest tech and social media company who believes in a life of complete transparency. If Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg had a baby, he would be it. He encourages Watson’s character to subscribe to that way of existence, but as she soon finds out, that probably isn’t the best way to go. That’s when the movie changes from an optimistic joyride to a modern thriller about what happens when you surrender your personal data and, in turn, it’s used against you.

The trailer alone makes me want to disconnect all my Google accounts, rework the privacy settings on Facebook and make sure that tape over my webcam is still secure. If you’re in the mood for tech paranoia, you can catch the trailer in the above video.

Along with Hanks and Watson, the film also stars Karen Gillan, John Boyega, Ellar Coltrane, Bill Paxton (oh hey there Twister and Titanic star), Patton Oswalt, Ellen Wong and more. Based on the novel by Dave Eggers, it heads to theaters on April 28, 2017.
